Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said \u201cnumerous things that would strongly suggest\u201d he is returning<\/a>, but among them is that McDaniel \u201crevealed he would be part of the search for a new general manager,\u201d according to Barry Jackson of the MIAMI HERALD. He said, \u201cWe are in the process of identifying the best [candidates]; all of the candidates will be more than qualified.\u201d There are currently six known candidates. NFL Network said that owner Stephen Ross wants to give McDaniel \u201ca chance to work with a new quarterback and a new general manager.\u201d McDaniel said that he and Ross spoke yesterday and will \u201cagain later this week and the team is not where either wants it to be.\u201d McDaniel: \u201cMy understanding is I\u2019m the coach of the Dolphins until told otherwise.\u201d Everything else he said yesterday \u201cpointed toward a return\u201d (MIAMI HERALD, 1\/5<\/a>). McDaniel would be in the mix with Ross, President & CEO Tom Garfinkel, SVP\/Football & Business Administration Brandon Shore, Relevent CEO Daniel Sillman and Pro Football HOFer Troy Aikman in search for a new GM (South Florida SUN SENTINEL, 1\/5<\/a>).<\/p>\n

GOT TO BE RIGHT: In Ft. Lauderdale, Chris Perkins wrote his opinion on Ross \u201cis shifting.\u201d Perkins added Ross \u201cwants to win\u201d and \u201cgives a damn.\u201d But he questions \u201cRoss\u2019 competence and awareness.\u201d Perkins: \u201cFans have lost confidence in Ross. My faith is waning, and I\u2019ve previously been a Ross supporter.\u201d Some things Ross can do to \u201cgain a measure of my faith back if he can successfully complete two tasks this offseason\u201d are hire a \u201cquality general manager\u201d and \u201cconvince fans that\u202fretaining coach Mike McDaniel\u202fis the right thing.\u201d Ross \u201cabsolutely, positively must get it right with\u202fthis ongoing general manager hiring process\u202fand, most importantly, the actual hire.\u201d He might \u201close a portion of the fanbase.\u201d Perkins: \u201cI\u2019m anxious to see how Ross convinces them that it\u2019s a good thing that McDaniel will be back in 2026.\u201d McDaniel being involved in hiring his boss is \u201cso Dolphins.\u201d His\u202freturn highlights a \u201cmajor issue with Ross\u2019 ownership tenure, and that\u2019s that the Dolphins get too committed to the wrong people.\u201d Perkins: \u201cIf I\u2019m a Dolphins fan there\u2019s no way I\u2019d spend a cent of my hard-earned money on a McDaniel-led team in the 2026 season, a team\u202fthat seems to be destined for mediocrity once again\u201d (South Florida SUN SENTINEL, 1\/5<\/a>).<\/p>\n

NEEDED REBUILD: In Ft. Lauderdale, Dave Hyde wrote Ross and Sillman \u201crealize the team\u2019s personnel department needs a complete rebuild.\u201d From GM, to scouts to middle-management. Hyde: \u201cTop to bottom. Everything.\u201d Aikman is not hiring the GM, he is \u201cidentifying potential candidates for interviews.\u201d Hyde: \u201cYou can see the value in that even if it\u2019s an unconventional move to raid the broadcast booth. But it\u2019s also unconventional to have almost the same inner circle, minus [former GM Chris] Grier, making decisions: Ross, team president Tom Garfinkel, vice president Brandon Shore and, what, is Dan Marino in or out?
