Over the past 24 hours, the drama unfolding on Montlake has sent shockwaves through the college sports world.<\/p>\n
To recap, UW Huskies star sophomore quarterback Demond Williams Jr. announced on social media Tuesday evening that he\u2019s entering the NCAA\u2019s transfer portal<\/a>, despite reportedly signing a contract just four days earlier to return to UW for the 2026 season.<\/p>\n Klatt: UW\u2019s Demond Williams situation \u2018everything that\u2019s wrong\u2019 in CFB<\/a><\/p>\n According to a report from Yahoo! Sports\u2019 Ross Dellenger<\/a>, UW officials suspect that another school contacted Williams after he signed a \u201clegally binding revenue-share contract\u201d with UW. That contract, per ESPN\u2019s Pete Thamel<\/a>, was in the mid-$4 million range and put Williams near the top the market for college football.<\/p>\n The Athletic\u2019s Bruce Feldman reported<\/a> that UW is \u201cprepared to pursue legal action to enforce the terms of the contract\u201d and that this dispute \u201ccould lead to a messy debate over the circumstances surrounding Williams\u2019 status.\u201d<\/p>\n On Wednesday morning, Feldman joined Seattle Sports\u2019 Bump and Stacy to discuss the situation.<\/p>\n \u201cLegally, it\u2019s gonna get super messy, because these contracts are different than they are in pro sports,\u201d Feldman said. \u201cThey\u2019re NIL<\/a> agreements. They don\u2019t count you as an employee, so it\u2019s a different kind of deal. It\u2019s gonna be fascinating to see how this thing unfolds from here.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s just the wild, wild West, and this is the latest example of it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Ultimately, Feldman thinks UW will end up seeking monetary damages for a breach of contract.<\/p>\n \u201cI would imagine, and just from hearing what the language of the contract is, that they will seek punitive damages,\u201d Feldman said. \u201cAnd I imagine that\u2019s going to come from whoever\u2019s going to pay him.<\/p>\n \u201cI imagine if he was expected to get in the $4-4.5 million range as part of a new deal with Washington, I imagine somebody\u2019s going to probably end up having to do a deal to pay him north of $6 million, and maybe more than that, to pay to get him.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s all speculation, but I don\u2019t see this being a clean break,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s already gotten super messy.\u201d<\/p>\n UW\u2019s \u2018scramble\u2019 for a new QB<\/p>\n Meanwhile, how does this impact UW\u2019s quarterback situation for 2026?<\/p>\n The NCAA\u2019s Jan. 2-16 transfer portal has already been open for days, so most of the top transfer quarterbacks have already landed with their new schools. That puts UW in a major time crunch to find a potential replacement for Williams.<\/p>\n Reports did surface Wednesday afternoon that Missouri transfer Beau Pribula is set to visit with UW<\/a>. Pribula is ranked by ESPN<\/a> as the 18th-best QB in the portal.<\/p>\n Report: Transfer QB visiting UW Huskies amid Demond Williams drama<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cThe portal opened up five days ago, but it was really in motion weeks before that,\u201d Feldman said prior to news of Pribula\u2019s visit. \u201cI mean, if you weren\u2019t already trying to get players lined up \u2013 not just evaluated, but to come on visits or have those discussions \u2013 you\u2019re probably too late to the dance.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a game of musical chairs, and I feel like because Washington thought they had a signed contract with a starting quarterback, they\u2019re not even inside the room where the music\u2019s being played.
