It appears the “it” coaching candidate is currently employed by the Seattle Seahawks<\/a>. On Wednesday, it was reported the Baltimore Ravens<\/a> requested an interview<\/a> with Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak for their vacant head coaching position. Baltimore now joins Las Vegas, Atlanta, Arizona and the New York Giants<\/a> as the five teams who have put in requests to interview him for head coach.<\/p>\n

The Ravens parted ways with John Harbaugh at the conclusion of the regular season, ending an 18-year run of one of the most successful head coaches in NFL history. Like Seattle was a few seasons ago, Baltimore immediately became the top job available for those seeking head coach jobs. Whoever they hire will inherit a roster with six Pro Bowlers and a two-time MVP in quarterback Lamar Jackson.<\/p>\n

If Baltimore were to hire Kubiak, it would be fitting on two levels. One, Klint’s father Gary was once their offensive coordinator for a season in 2014, so the Ravens organization is certainly familiar with the style of offense Klint would bring to the table. Second, and perhaps most notably, it would be Baltimore poaching a key candidate from Seattle this time around. Two years ago, it was the Seahawks who hired Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald – a previous “it” coaching candidate – away from the Charm City. A decision that ultimately changed the fates of both teams. Seattle quickly became a legitimate Super Bowl contender, while Baltimore’s defense floundered, leaving the franchise in search of new leadership.<\/p>\n

While this is exciting on a certain level, because Seattle wouldn’t have such a desirable candidate if he wasn’t doing something successful for them, it does highlight the potential downside<\/a> of having a defensive-minded head coach. Kubiak getting requests for interviews does not guarantee him a head coaching job, but the fact five of the seven teams in need of one have reached out to him suggests his time to shine at a top spot is coming sooner than later.<\/p>\n
