Instead of the Cowboys<\/a> reaching out to teams or coaches without jobs for their defensive coordinator vacancy, the franchise on Thursday granted the Washington Commanders permission to speak with tight ends coach Lunda Wells for their offensive coordinator\u2019s job, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Dallas Morning News.<\/p>\n

Wells developed a good relationship with Commanders head coach Dan Quinn, who was the Cowboys\u2019 defensive coordinator for three seasons.<\/p>\n

Wells has been the Cowboys\u2019 tight ends coach for the last six seasons. He has aspirations to become an offensive coordinator and was a tight ends coach and assistant offensive line coach with the New York Giants for eight seasons before leaving for the Cowboys.<\/p>\n

Wells has coached some talented tight ends with the Cowboys from Jake Ferguson, who earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2023, to Dalton Schultz.<\/p>\n

Washington has an opening after offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury was let go after the 2025 season<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Cowboys are seeking a defensive coordinator after Matt Eberflus was relieved of his duties on Tuesday<\/a>. The team is in the process of evaluating candidates for that position<\/a> and hasn\u2019t finalized any plans as yet.<\/p>\n

A person with knowledge of the team\u2019s thinking told The News owner Jerry Jones, co-owner Stephen Jones and coach Brian Schottenheimer plan on attending the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., in late January. Interviews for the defensive coordinator spot could take place there.<\/p>\n
