Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is stepping down<\/a> after 19 years of leading the storied organization, the team announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Speculation about Tomlin’s future started circulating after the Steelers failed to nab a playoff spot until their Week 18 victory over the\u00a0Baltimore Ravens.<\/p>\n

Then, after a 30-6 loss to the\u00a0Houston Texans<\/a>\u00a0in the wild-card round, Tomlin was also faced with questions about what was next for both him and the organization. Tomlin was under contract through 2026 with a club option for an additional year due to be exercised by March.<\/p>\n

While the 53-year-old coach enjoyed success early in his career and helped the Steelers win Super Bowl 43 in his second season, his playoff record hasn’t been nearly as pristine in recent seasons.<\/p>\n

He did, however, win often against his AFC North rival Cincinnati Bengals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Regular season: 193-114-2.<\/p>\n

Tomlin is tied for ninth with fellow former Steelers coach Chuck Noll for the most regular-season victories at 193 wins, as they both share the most wins in franchise history. He is one of just 11 coaches in NFL history to win at least 200 games in the regular season and postseason combined.<\/p>\n

Tomlin was hired by Pittsburgh in 2007 at 34 years old to succeed future Hall of Fame coach Bill Cowher. He then led the organization to a Super Bowl title in just his second year at the helm.<\/p>\n

Tomlin has never had a losing season as head coach of the Steelers. The team has posted at least eight victories in all 19 of his seasons. However, postseason disappointments became a recurring theme of the latter half of his tenure.<\/p>\n

The loss to the Texans was Tomlin’s seventh consecutive postseason defeat, leaving him tied for the worst playoff losing streak of any coach in league history with former Bengals coach Marvin Lewis. Pittsburgh has not won in the playoffs since the 2016 season.<\/p>\n

Mike Tomlin Super Bowl wins<\/p>\n

Tomlin only won the Super Bowl once in 2009, during his second season with the team. Tomlin, only 36 years old at the time, became the youngest head coach to win the NFL championship after the Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals, 27-23.<\/p>\n

He led the Steelers to the Super Bowl again in 2010, but lost to the Green Bay Packers 31-25.<\/p>\n
