The Commanders have shared the first conceptual renderings of their $3.65B stadium and mixed-use development with the public. A previous rendering had been released when the stadium deal was announced but was only a high-end concept, not the stadium\u2019s actual design. The stadium, designed by HKS<\/a> and expected to open in 2030, features a continuous colonnade facade and a sculpted, translucent roof. Its design and placement within the 180-acre site of the former RFK Memorial Stadium aligns with the L\u2019Enfant Plan<\/a>, Pierre Charles L\u2019Enfant\u2019s gridded 1791 masterplan for the District of Columbia, as well as the city\u2019s Monumental Axis. As such, the stadium\u2019s profile dips in deference to views of the U.S. Capitol and monuments directly to the west.<\/p>\n

The venue will accommodate up to 70,000 people and be surrounded by eventual mixed-use development. At least 30% of the site will be dedicated to active and passive recreation and HKS\u2019 design adds outdoor plazas, public spaces, and green areas to the surroundings, enhancing the existing public park space and more closely linking the stadium with the Anacostia River\u2019s waterfront. D.C. officials, the Commanders and HKS have been holding meetings with the local community to collect input about the stadium\u2019s design and the broader project.<\/p>\n

The Commanders played at RFK Memorial Stadium from 1961 to 1996, before moving to Maryland. The RFK Stadium structure has been torn down and construction on its replacement begins in spring 2027. The team is providing $2.5B of the total project cost, which was approved by D.C. City Council last September<\/a>. That decision added the Commanders to the list of active NFL stadium projects that includes Buffalo (opening in the summer of 2026), Tennessee (2027), Cleveland (2029), and Denver (2031), though the Broncos are only in the very earliest phases of building a stadium at Burnham Yards.<\/p>\n
