{"id":691284,"date":"2026-01-20T13:56:16","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T13:56:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/691284\/"},"modified":"2026-01-20T13:56:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T13:56:16","slug":"cam-newton-defends-cj-stroud-after-poor-performance-against-patriots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/691284\/","title":{"rendered":"Cam Newton defends CJ Stroud after poor performance against Patriots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"68\">On Monday, after the divisional round weekend wrapped up, one of the biggest storylines was CJ Stroud&#8217;s performance in the Houston Texans\u2019 loss to the New England Patriots. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6b\">Many media personalities questioned whether he should start for them next season and if he deserves an extension.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6e\">Stroud was abysmal; he completed just 20 of his 47 pass attempts for 212 yards, threw four interceptions, all in the first half, and his QBR for the game was 21.1.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6h\">Just for context, a quarterback could spike the ball for the entire game and finish with a QBR of 39.6; that\u2019s how bad of a day it was for the former No. 2 draft pick, picked behind Bryce Young, who was drafted first overall to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/panthers\/onsi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carolina.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/01kfdk7eqh827tqth8sd.jpg\" alt=\"C.J. Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-Imagn Images | David Butler II-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6u\">Panther legend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/panthers\/onsi\/news\/cam-newton-snubbed-college-football-hall-fame-class-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cam Newton<\/a> offered a different perspective, veering away from what most national media had to say about Stroud coming out of Sunday afternoon. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6x\">Newton makes frequent appearances on ESPN\u2019s flagship debate show, \u201cFirst Take,\u201d and on Monday morning, the question was asked if Stroud was the biggest reason that the Patriots won.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"70\">Newton answered the question, saying yes, Stroud is largely why the Patriots are headed to the AFC Championship, but offered some context to why he thinks Stroud wasn\u2019t able to succeed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"73\">Newton stated, \u201cYes, but you have to understand, when you\u2019re evaluating a certain player, it\u2019s hard to evaluate what you just didn\u2019t have.\u201d The former Panthers QB is, of course, insinuating that the Houston offense faced challenges beyond Stroud&#8217;s poor play.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Yes, but you have to understand, when you&#8217;re evaluating a certain player, it&#8217;s hard to evaluate what you just didn&#8217;t have.&#8221; \u270d\ufe0f<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CameronNewton?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@CameronNewton<\/a> on if C.J. Stroud was the reason for the Texans falling to the Patriots 28-16 \ud83c\udfc6 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nsfLOf1dbj\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/nsfLOf1dbj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 First Take (@FirstTake) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FirstTake\/status\/2013279850836951054?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">January 19, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"79\">The Texans faced multiple issues: their star receiver, Nico Collins, was unavailable due to a concussion; tight end Dalton Schultz was injured early in the game; and their offensive line was among the worst in the league all season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7c\">So yes, Stroud hasn\u2019t been dealt the best cards this season, but when the play is as poor as his was, it comes down to just bad decision-making, and Stroud couldn\u2019t get his head right at all in the game. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7f\">It was a deer in the headlights performance from a QB who two seasons ago had one of the best rookie campaigns ever.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7i\">Cam Newton highlighted other reasons why Stroud and the Texans&#8217; offense performed poorly, but he concluded his answer by saying Stroud needs to look himself in the mirror this offseason and improve.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7l\">\u201cThese are times, are defining moments in careers that you have to say to yourself, going into the offseason, hey I have to be better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7o\">With all the questions now being about whether Carolina made the right call with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/panthers\/onsi\/news\/gm-dan-morgan-take-why-panthers-fifth-year-option-bryce-young\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bryce Young<\/a> after all, Stroud has a \u201cprove it\u201d season ahead of him going into 2026, and Newton thinks that if Houston and head coach DeMeco Ryans can build a better foundation around Stroud, he can thrive once again<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;
