While most of the offseason conversation for the Dallas Cowboys has been focused on hiring a new defensive coordinator<\/a>, the offense could be losing an important coach. The Cowboys are in danger of having quarterbacks coach Steve Shimko leave for a promotion with another team.<\/p>\n

Although it didn\u2019t feel like it would impact the Cowboys when the Miami Dolphins<\/a> hired former Green Bay Packers<\/a> defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley to be their next head coach<\/a>, it might wind up costing Dallas one of their most important offensive coaches. Shimko coached under Hafley when he was the head coach at Boston College, which included being his offensive coordinator in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Eagles<\/a>\u2019 offense was in the middle of the pack nationally under Shimko, scoring almost 25 points per game and rushing for 25 touchdowns, but that was with limited talent. There has been no formal request from the Dolphins<\/a> to speak with Shimko about their OC position yet, but it shouldn\u2019t be a surprise if Hafley does eventually reach out for permission.<\/p>\n

If the current QB coach did leave it would be a big loss for the Cowboys and starting QB Dak Prescott. After a rough season in 2024, Prescott bounced back<\/a> and found his game again last season under Shimko\u2019s tutelage. Many team observers believe this might have been Prescott\u2019s best season under center, throwing for 4,552 yards and 30 touchdowns in his first season with Brian Schottenheimer, Klayton Adams and Shimko guiding him. Losing one of those three key pieces might interrupt the chemistry that made Prescott and the Cowboys\u2019 offense one of the best in the league last season.<\/p>\n

The NFL is a \u2018who do you know league\u2019 and head coaches tend to stick with guys they are comfortable with on their staff. This should make the Cowboys nervous about possibly losing Shimko to Hafley and the Dolphins.<\/p>\n
