During that 2023 season, his team averaged 135.8 rushing yards per game, good for sixth in the NFL. In 2025, with Tagovailoa and the passing game having taken a massive step back, the ground game still ranked 13th with 120.2 yards per game. During his last stint as an offensive coordinator, McDaniel helped lead the 49ers offense to the seventh-ranked unit in the NFL with an average of 375.7 yards per game. They also ranked seventh in rushing yards per game with 127.4 per game. Out of all the available play-callers left on the market, McDaniel was arguably the best there was. He had several interviews for head coaching opportunities this cycle but he chose to step out of the running for those and make his way out to Los Angeles where he will get the chance to coach Justin Herbert in 2026.

Mike McDaniel could turn the Chargers into an AFC powerhouse – SB Nation
Mike McDaniel made a move this week that we rarely see in NFL coaching circles: Understanding his limitations. The former head coach of the Miami Dolphins informed teams, most notably the Browns, that he was withdrawing his name from any head coaching considerations, which were shortly followed by reports that he is going to accept a position as offensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Chargers. It’s a step backwards career wise, but also the best decision McDaniel could have ever made. Instead of ramming his head into a new brick wall trying to change the fortunes of a franchise from the top, McDaniel now gets to be a piece of the puzzle. It’s a role that suits him far better for this point in his life and coaching career, with the added benefit of being a key reason the landscape of the AFC will change in 2026 and beyond. In order to understand why McDaniel to the Chargers is so exciting, we have to go back.

Packers release CB Trevon Diggs, add two on futures contracts – Acme Packing Company
Joining Crumedy as a new addition to the Packers is quarterback Kyle McCord, who started for both Ohio State and Syracuse in college. He too was a 6th-round draft pick like Crumedy, going 181st overall to Philadelphia in 2025. He did not make the roster at final cuts in August, however, spending the entirety of 2025 on the Eagles’ practice squad. After three years with the Buckeyes, including a 2023 season that saw him lead the Big Ten in yards per attempt, he transferred to Syracuse for the 2024 season and ended the year as the FBS’ most prolific passer. His 391 completions, 592 pass attempts, and 4,779 yards all led the FBS last season and he earned a second-place and a few third-place votes for the 2024 Heisman Trophy.

Scouting Jets edge defender Ochaun Mathis – Gang Green Nation
The Eagles then signed Mathis to their practice squad and he made one appearance, with one tackle, down the stretch. They did sign him to a futures deal after the season, though.

Cowboys need to hit home runs this offseason to avoid last place in the NFC East – Blogging The Boys
Of course, there’s also the Philadelphia Eagles, who are not afraid to counter their mistakes in a big way, making sure they don’t happen again the following year. They are also looking for a new offensive coordinator to help elevate the offense to pair it with their championship-level defense. The Eagles are determined to pursue the top options available on the market. That’s why there is enormous pressure on the Cowboys to not only nail their hire at defensive coordinator, but sign quality free agents and add two starting, A-plus rookies with their two first-round picks. Jerry Jones needs to be aggressive. Dallas is still interested in talking with Jim Leonhard in person, but the Denver Broncos’ extended playoff stay has put it on hold.

Washington Commanders Coaching Search Tracker: Commanders assistant gets head coach interview – Hogs Haven
Anthony Lynn hasn’t been a head coach since 2020 when he was fired by the Los Angeles Chargers after four seasons, but has his first interview opportunity with the Buffalo Bills. It is understood. A Super Bowl-winning coach with 18 years of experience, 12 of those years ending with playoff appearances, is not taking a job where he will be overruled by a first-time GM with a 22-45-1 overall record. Harbaugh reports directly to co-owner John Mara. He said that “made sense” and was the type of arrangement he had in Baltimore with Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti. “Everybody wants to make a little bit about who’s making what decision, but at the end the point is that we should all agree to agree,” Harbaugh said. It is a big deal, though, that in an organization that has operated with the GM at the top of the organizational chart since the days of George Young has taken that power away from a GM who had it for the past four years.

Social Media Information:

BGN Facebook Page: Click here to like our page

BGN Twitter: Follow @BleedingGreen

BGN BlueSky: Follow @bleedgreennation.bsky.social

BGN Instagram: Follow @BleedingGreenInsta

BGN Manager: Follow Brandon Lee Gowton on Twitter | BlueSky | Threads

BGN Radio Twitter: Follow @BGN_Radio

Eagles Question of the Day: Are you concerned about the Eagles’ offensive coordinator search?
