New Miami Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley’s first known interview for his defensive coordinator vacancy is a former Miami Hurricanes player and assistant coach.

The Dolphins interviewed Philadelphia Eagles defensive line coach Clint Hurtt for the job, according to an ESPN report Saturday morning.

Hurtt was a defensive tackle for UM from 1997 to 2000. He got his coaching career started as a graduate assistant in 2003 and 2004 and then became Miami’s defensive line coach from 2006 through 2009.

Hurtt has previous coordinating experience, leading the Seattle Seahawks defense in 2022 and 2023 under Pete Carroll.

He currently leads one of the NFL’s top defensive lines with the Eagles, whose dominance at the line of scrimmage helped lead them to a win in last season’s Super Bowl. Hurtt has coached the likes of defensive tackles Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Milton Williams and Brandon Graham in Philadelphia.

After his time with the Hurricanes, Hurtt went to Louisville for four seasons and had a stint with the Chicago Bears before working his way up with the Seahawks to defensive coordinator in Seattle.

The Dolphins have had Anthony Weaver as defensive coordinator under previous coach Mike McDaniel the past two seasons.

Weaver is up for multiple head coach openings with the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills and Arizona Cardinals.

Miami would be in line to pick up a compensatory third-round pick if one of those teams hire him as a head coach. Under the Rooney rule, an NFL team that loses a minority coach to a head coaching vacancy picks up the extra draft pick.

Hafley, who has a defensive background, has already said he’ll call defensive plays, so his defensive coordinator hire won’t have that freedom.

He has also said he wants to move quickly to add coordinators, setting a preliminary goal of hiring them over the weekend.

On Friday night, Hafley made the first hire on his coaching staff, bringing aboard Chris Tabor as special teams coordinator.

New Miami Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley’s first known interview for his defensive coordinator vacancy is a former Miami…

[2049
102606,217,7,8628,216,251,2087,6
post-705306","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-miami-dolphins","tag-clint-hurtt","tag-dolphins","tag-football","tag-jeff-hafley","tag-miami","tag-miami-dolphins","tag-miamidolphins","tag-nfl
["GET
