He was Philadelphia’s backup quarterback in 2010 and 2011.

After his short NFL career, Kafka joined former Eagles coach Andy Reid’s staff with the Chiefs. He spent four of his five years in Kansas City as the quarterbacks coach for Patrick Mahomes.

Kafka called plays for the Giants’ offense in 2022, 2023 and 2025. New York ranked 18th in total offense in 2022, 29th in 2023 and 13th in 2025.

The numbers are underwhelming, but Kafka’s struggles are tied to the Giants’ offensive line and quarterback issues. He could have had more success with Philadelphia’s talented supporting cast.

But with the Lions, Kafka could restore his stock as a future head coach. He could spend one season in Detroit before taking another OC job next offseason. The Eagles may not have made him an offer.

The Eagles have one less offensive coordinator candidate to choose from.
