Decision points always create questions, and Matt LaFleur\u2019s decision to hire Jonathan Gannon as his next defensive coordinator will be no different.<\/p>\n
There is plenty to question, too, though we won\u2019t know the answers for a long, long time. Was Gannon the right hire? Only time will tell. Should LaFleur have gone with soe of his other candidates? Again, it\u2019s much too early to tell. Which candidate hired this cycle will become a coaching star, if any? Hopefully the answer is Jonathan Gannon, but he got one crack at the top job already. What would it take for him to be successful this time around?<\/p>\n
And perhaps the biggest of all: if there was mutual interest between Jim Leonhard and the Packers, as has been reported, should LaFleur have waited to see the result of the AFC Championship game before making his call?<\/p>\n
Obviously, as we\u2019ve said already, these questions can\u2019t and won\u2019t be answered for some time. But they\u2019re important ones to monitor, and we\u2019ll have to keep an eye on how they develop over the next few years.<\/p>\n
The timing of the Gannon hire is going to be an interesting part of the long-term evaluation of the move.<\/p>\n
Gannon has run multiple different defenses in his NFL career, but won\u2019t commit to one being his \u201cbest\u201d or \u201cpreferred\u201d scheme, beyond trying to make it hard on the other guys.<\/p>\n
