Former San Francisco 49ers star quarterback John Brodie has died, the organization has announced<\/a>. He was 90 years old.<\/p>\n

A member of the 49ers Hall of Fame, Brodie spent his entire 17-season NFL<\/a> career with San Francisco after being drafted by the 49ers with the No. 3 overall pick in the 1957 NFL Draft.<\/p>\n

“The 49ers family is saddened to learn of the passing of one of the franchise\u2019s all-time great players, John Brodie,\u201c San Francisco 49ers Co-Chairman John York said in a statement. \u201dAs a kid, my 49ers fandom began by watching John play quarterback on television. He displayed an incredible commitment towards his teammates and his support of the organization never wavered after his playing days. <\/p>\n

\u201cJohn became a dear friend of mine, and he will always be remembered as an important part of 49ers history. We express our deepest condolences to his wife, Sue, and the entire Brodie family.\u201d<\/p>\n

John Brodie played for San Francisco from 1957-73. He appeared in 201 games and made 159 starts during that time.<\/p>\n

Brodie threw for 31,548 yards and 214 touchdowns in his career. He ranks second in franchise history in passing yards and third in passing touchdowns.<\/p>\n

A two-time All-Pro, Brodie was named the NFL MVP in 1970 when he led San Francisco to its first of two consecutive NFC Championship games.<\/p>\n

Prior to playing in the NFL Brodie was an All-American at Stanford.
