{"id":714725,"date":"2026-01-29T20:00:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T20:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/714725\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T20:00:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T20:00:18","slug":"texans-urged-to-make-39-million-decision-on-key-free-agent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/714725\/","title":{"rendered":"Texans Urged to Make $39 Million Decision on Key Free Agent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<img width=\"780\" height=\"436\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/GettyImages-2253742683-e1769713074827.jpg\" class=\"attachment-featured-image size-featured-image wp-post-image\" alt=\"Demeco Ryans, Houston Texans\"   decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGetty\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Head coach Demeco Ryans of the Houston Texans looks on during the second quarter against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"Houston Texans\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/houston-texans\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"155566\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Texans<\/a> have several important decisions to make this offseason, but chief among them may be on their offensive line.<\/p>\n<p>Guard <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/minnesota-vikings\/ed-ingram-texans-draft-bust-news\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ed Ingram,<\/a> whom Houston traded a 2026 sixth-round pick for last March, is set to become an unrestricted free agent after playing out his rookie contract.<\/p>\n<p>The former <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/minnesota-vikings\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Minnesota Viking<\/a> had an incredible first year with the Texans, stabilizing an interior offensive line that was questionable at best before his arrival.<\/p>\n<p>With Houston\u2019s aging offensive line, retaining Ingram is a necessity, and his impact can be ignored considering how few times quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/houston-texans\/mock-draft-cj-stroud-support\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">C.J. Stroud<\/a> was sacked this season compared to his first two seasons in the NFL.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Ingram\u2019s Importance to the Texans<\/p>\n<p>ESPN\u2019s Houston Texans reporter, DJ Bien-Aime, stressed the importance of bringing back Ingram this offseason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Texans\u2019 trade in the 2025 offseason for the former 2022 second-round pick was met with skepticism, citing his benching during his final season with the Vikings. But he blossomed in Houston, allowing the 12th lowest pressure rate (6.4) among guards with at least 400 pass block snaps,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/47734878\/2026-nfl-free-agency-32-free-agents-decisions-every-team#NYG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">wrote<\/a> Bien-Aime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe played a vital offensive line role for a group that allowed quarterback <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/c-j-stroud\/\" title=\"C.J. Stroud\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"155571\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">C.J. Stroud<\/a> to be sacked only 23 times, a steep drop from the 2024 season in which he was sacked 52 times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As one of the league\u2019s top young interior offensive linemen, Ingram could command a decent-sized contract that they may not have the cap space for.<\/p>\n<p>Houston currently sits at roughly $14 million under the salary cap, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/overthecap.com\/salary-cap-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Over the Cap.<\/a> If they hope to re-sign Ingram, general manager <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/houston-texans\/caserio-trade-deadline-roster-stroud\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nick Caserio<\/a> is going to have to get creative to free up the money to bring their offensive lineman back.<\/p>\n<p>Caserio doesn\u2019t seem worried about the prospect of losing Ingram, though, and expects productive contract conversations this offseason via NFL insider <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AaronWilson_NFL\/status\/2014009350419865645?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Aaron Wilson.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018I think Cole (Popovich) did a phenomenal job,\u2019 #Texans GM Nick Caserio on offensive line, coach \u2018That group definitely improved,&#8217;\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AaronWilson_NFL\/status\/2014009350419865645?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">wrote<\/a> Wilson on X.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdded that pass protection improved markedly. Noted that <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/ed-ingram\/\" title=\"Ed Ingram\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"155570\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ed Ingram<\/a>, a free agent played very well and expects talks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With how well both the offensive line and Ingram performed in 2025, it makes sense why the Texans would want to maintain that continuity moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>What Would an Ed Ingram Contract Look Like?<\/p>\n<p>The guard market has become fairly expensive in recent years, and that doesn\u2019t bode well for the cap space-strapped Houston Texans.<\/p>\n<p>But thanks to Ingram\u2019s shaky start with the Minnesota Vikings and one good season in Houston, he doesn\u2019t figure to receive top-of-the-line money on his next deal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nfl\/player\/market-value\/_\/id\/76935\/ed-ingram\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Spotrac<\/a> projects a three-year, $39 million deal for Ingram, paying him an average salary of around $13 million per year.<\/p>\n<p>That would make him the 13th-highest-paid guard in the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/\" title=\"NFL\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"155572\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NFL<\/a>, in between the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"Chicago Bears\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/chicago-bears\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"155565\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Bears<\/a>\u2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/chicago-bears\/jonah-jackson-contract-incentive-durability-bonus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jonah Jackson<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/denver-broncos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Denver Broncos\u2019<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/denver-broncos\/powers-ir-turner-yell-practice-squad-ehlinger\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Powers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Certainly a palatable deal if Houston can get it done.<\/p>\n<p>The Texans have several key contributors set to hit free agency, such as wide receiver <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/houston-texans\/kirk-fine-davis-partiots-free-agency-roster\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Kirk<\/a> and defensive linemen <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/houston-texans\/draft-gators-banks-roster-ryans-patriots\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sheldon Rankins<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/houston-texans\/barnett-fine-penalty-cardinals-mcbride\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Derek Barnett.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But if they want Stroud staying upright in 2026 and beyond, Ingram should be the priority.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore Heavy on Texans\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\tLoading more stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Getty Head coach Demeco Ryans of the Houston Texans looks on during the second quarter against the Los&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":714726,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2056],"tags":[7,221,253,2368,6,222],"class_list":{"0":"post-714725","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-houston-texans","8":"tag-football","9":"tag-houston","10":"tag-houston-texans","11":"tag-houstontexans","12":"tag-nfl","13":"tag-texans"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/channels.im\/@nfl\/115980169801392451","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/714725","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=714725"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/714725\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/714726"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=714725"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=714725"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=714725"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
