MOBILE, Ala. \u2014 Scott Tolzien<\/a> spent part of his NFL playing career as Aaron Rodgers’ backup.<\/p>\n

He might be spending the next part of his career as Rodgers\u2019 coach.<\/p>\n

The New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach confirmed Thursday that the Pittsburgh Steelers had requested an interview with him for their offensive coordinator job.<\/p>\n

Beyond the ties to Rodgers, whose future is uncertain as the 42-year-old mulls retirement, Tolzien has a close connection with coach Mike McCarthy \u2014 who the Steelers hired this month to replace Mike Tomlin.<\/p>\n

Tolzien began his NFL coaching career under McCarthy in Dallas.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnytime you get an opportunity to go interview for one of these (coordinator positions), that\u2019s a really great growth opportunity,\u201d Tolzien said from the Senior Bowl, where he\u2019s serving as the American team\u2019s offensive coordinator. \u201cI\u2019m lucky that I\u2019m in the position that I enjoy where I\u2019m at. Things are going really good and yet, you always see what\u2019s out there.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut my focus right now is this game. It\u2019s awesome being here with all these players and coaches, so you want to put your best foot forward with them and give it your best shot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tolzien said Saints coach Kellen Moore has been supportive of the Steelers\u2019 pursuit. Pittsburgh also reportedly requested an interview with Saints assistant offensive line coach Jahri Evans for its offensive line coach. A day earlier, New Orleans general manager Mickey Loomis said he did not anticipate any changes to Moore\u2019s staff, but also didn\u2019t rule out the possibility.<\/p>\n

Moore hired Tolzien, 38, to join his Saints staff last offseason after the two previously worked together in Dallas. This season, Tolzien worked closely with quarterbacks Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough, helping usher along their development.<\/p>\n

Tolzien said he didn\u2019t know how much his work in New Orleans caught Pittsburgh\u2019s attention, but added he appreciated working with both of them.<\/p>\n

Tolzien said McCarthy has been \u201cincredible\u201d for his career, both as a player and coach. Before entering the coaching ranks, Tolzien spent seven years in the NFL \u2014 three of which were under McCarthy in Green Bay.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve learned a ton about how to approach a game plan, how to manage a team and everything in between,\u201d Tolzien said. \u201cHe\u2019s gotten these jobs for a reason. And I\u2019m super appreciative to have crossed paths with him.\u201d<\/p>\n
