The hire says more about Nick Sirianni\u2019s future than it does about almost anything related to Mannion or the Eagles offense. Whether he made the ultimate decision or not, the coach will have to take ownership for selecting one of the least experienced coordinators in the NFL, if not the least experienced. Sirianni could be rewarded with immediate success. The Eagles could even have marginal offensive improvement that would allow him to maintain Mannion for more than one season. But if there is further regression, or even sudden failure, the gamble could push Sirianni into a firing line that saw nine coaches lose their jobs over the past several months. And here\u2019s why: The line between success and failure for Sirianni is thinner than for most because he doesn\u2019t have a discernible offensive philosophy or calls plays. He does a lot as a CEO-type coach, more than some on the outside are willing to concede. But winning here is suddenly not like winning at most places. Sirianni helped raise those expectations. But clearing that bar or falling short of it would both seemingly have him back where he\u2019s been four times before: having to replace an offensive coordinator.<\/p>\n
1 – Seems like some Packers fans are annoyed to be losing Sean Mannion. Why\u2019s that the case? I think Packers fans just wanted new leadership on offense, as some of them haven\u2019t fully accepted that Matt LaFleur is in control of that side of the ball. Adam Stenavich is the most tenured offensive coordinator in the NFL right now, and people put a lot of the offensive structure\u2019s blame (they like to run inside, to the dismay of many) on him instead of Matt. Packers fans hoped that they would buy out the entire offensive staff this offseason. What\u2019s happened is they\u2019ve let Jeff Hafley take whoever he wants (mostly on defense but also Nathaniel Hackett) to Miami and haven\u2019t fired a single coach (buyouts cost money). So Mannion was viewed by some as an alternative to Stenavich\/Hackett\/Luke Getsy getting the OC job in Green Bay in 2026. For the most part, Mannion wasn\u2019t talked about much as a potential future OC candidate until his name showed up on the East-West Shrine Bowl\u2019s roster as the offensive coordinator of the West team this offseason. Fans latched onto the name after that.<\/p>\n
However extensive his preparation may have been while working under the likes of McVay and LaFleur, the Eagles offensive coordinator job represents a significant step up for Mannion \u2014 one that would have required plenty of projection from the Eagles to answer some of the biggest questions his lack of experience invites. It\u2019s still unclear exactly where he falls on the spectrum of offenses that trace back to McVay\u2019s roots and, even then, how much agency he\u2019ll have to install that offense with Eagles coach Nick Sirianni and quarterback Jalen Hurts\u2019 already-established voices in the room. In lieu of a home-run hire early in the cycle, the Eagles took a home-run swing with Mannion. They will have a much better sense of Mannion\u2019s vision and command after two interviews, but there\u2019s plenty of variance in appointing such a young, inexperienced coach for a team that will go into next season with legitimate, potentially fleeting Super Bowl aspirations.<\/p>\n
Of the last four Eagles offensive coordinators, two became head coaches after one year (Shane Steichen, Kellen Moore) \u2014 and two were fired after one year (Brian Johnson, Kevin Patullo). The key for Mannion will be quarterback Jalen Hurts. The best approach will be to design and implement an offense that Hurts likes, with plays he wants to run and concepts he wants to execute. Even if that means starting from scratch to design a new playbook. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni previously was an offensive coordinator. Unlike other offensive specialists, Sirianni has delegated much of the offense (some would say too much) to his coordinator.<\/p>\n
The Eagles were prepared to give the new offensive coordinator full autonomy, but it remains to be seen whether that remains true with a hire as inexperienced as Mannion. Sirianni gave up playcalling a handful of games into his first season and has stepped into more of a CEO role in recent seasons, though he has gotten more involved in the offense when he felt it was warranted, including down the stretch last season to try to elevate a sagging offense.<\/p>\n
3. He was the offensive coordinator at the East\/West Shrine Bowl. Earlier in January at the East\/West Shrine Bowl, Mannion got his first taste of being an offensive coordinator. He served in the role for the first time in his coaching career, helping the West Team come away with a 21-17 victory. Mannion\u2019s quarterbacks completed 22 of 28 passes in the game while the West Team rushed for 142 yards. \u201cIt was quickly apparent in meeting with Sean that he is a bright young coach with a tremendous future ahead of him in this league,\u201d Sirianni added in his statement. \u201cI was impressed by his systematic views on offensive football and his strategic approach. Sean\u2019s 11 years in the NFL have provided him a great opportunity to learn from and grow alongside some of the best coaches in the game. As a result, he has a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be invaluable to our team moving forward. I can\u2019t wait to see Sean with our team, and I want to welcome him and his wife, Megan, to the Eagles family.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mannion is a Flyers fan. In an interview with the Oregonian in 2014, he was asked some random questions about his likes and dislikes, and he said this: \u201cI really like the Philadelphia Flyers. I always get asked why I like the Flyers, and it\u2019s because I started watching two years ago when the Flyers played the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and it was a great series. At the same time, HBO had a special on the Flyers for the Winter Classic, so then I watched that and got to know the team. I watch all their games when they\u2019re on TV. Claude Giroux is my favorite player.\u201d Mannion also revealed in that interview that Chipotle is his favorite place to eat and True Detective, Game of Thrones and the Newsroom were his favorite TV shows.<\/p>\n
1) Tight end. Dallas Goedert, Grant Calcaterra, and Kylen Granson are all scheduled to be free agents in March. The only Eagles tight end under contract in 2026 is TE4 Cameron Latu. It appears to be a good crop of tight ends in this year\u2019s draft, and I expect the Eagles to select at least one after surprisingly not adding a tight end in the 2025 draft. However, because they are so thin at the position, the Eagles are also going to have to add a competent veteran or two in free agency, whether that\u2019s re-signing Goedert or adding some someone else.<\/p>\n
Fortunately, Cunningham seems capable of doing just that. The new GM, who grew up as a Falcons fan in Roswell and thus understands our pain, joins up with a strong background that features time in scouting and stints with the Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles, and Bears; he was part of Super Bowl winners with Philly and Baltimore. Bears GM Ryan Poles has credited him for being an assistant who delivers good insights, hold Poles accountable for his thinking and decisions, and is willing to challenge decision-makers. The most notable decision, one that Poles notes, is that Cunningham prevented him from trading up for Rome Odunze, arguing that he\u2019d fall to the Bears as he ultimately did. For a franchise that has been crazy about trading up for close to 20 years, patience is music to my ears.<\/p>\n
It feels unfair to call the Cowboys hiring Christian Parker an experiment. He is a more than worthy candidate to be the team\u2019s defensive coordinator. Hiring a coach and someone to run your defense is a very serious thing. There is nothing experimental about it in a literal sense. But those differences that he carries? The deviations from the norm that he represents? What if it doesn\u2019t work out with him? Is it not possible that the Cowboys could, as anyone would to be honest, look at how they tried things in a different way and saw them fail only to learn the lesson that different was bad? This is an exaggerated way of looking at this idea to be clear, but it is why more than just the defense improving is relying on Christian Parker thriving as the team\u2019s defensive coordinator.<\/p>\n
Jason Simmons joined the Commanders after Quinn and Whitt were hired in 2024 as the defensive pass game coordinator. He interviewed with the Pittsburgh Steelers for their open defensive coordinator job under new head coach Mike McCarthy. That job went to former Las Vegas Raiders DC Patrick Graham, but Simmons will be joining his new coaching staff in Pittsburgh where he played safety for four seasons(1998-2001 Simmons is the first assistant coach to exit, but there will likely be a lot more changes on both sides of the ball with two new coordinators.<\/p>\n
The New York Giants will meet with Indianapolis Colts\u2019 offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter about their vacant coordinator position, according to ESPN NFL insider Peter Schrager. Giants head coach John Harbaugh had, of course, hoped to hire Todd Monken for the job. Monken, though, accepted a job as head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Cooter is the second known interview request by the Giants as they move on to Plan B in their hunt for an offensive coordinator. The other was with Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach and two-time Giants backup quarterback Davis Webb.<\/p>\n
Super Bowl LX is officially set and it would appear that we are in for quite the treat with the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots facing off.
