He was an assistant coach for New Orleans from 2016-23 (mostly under Sean Payton) and had a major part in the development of Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen. Curry had multiple interviews for offensive coordinator positions this cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Curry, a former star quarterback and basketball player for Hampton High and North Carolina, played 76 NFL games as a receiver for the Oakland Raiders from 2002-08, making 193 catches for 2,347 yards and 13 touchdowns.<\/p>\n<p>SCHEDULE CHANGES<\/p>\n<p>Gianna prompts more switches<\/p>\n<p>A few more changes were necessitated by Winter Storm Gianna.<\/p>\n<p>In women\u2019s basketball, Hampton\u2019s Sunday home game against North Carolina A&amp;T at the HU Convocation Center was moved from 2 to 7 p.m. It is still scheduled to be televised on Monumental Sports Network.<\/p>\n<p>In men\u2019s basketball, Virginia Peninsula Community College\u2019s home game against Patrick &amp; Henry CC, of the Martinsville area, at SafeHaven Empowerment Center in Newport News was postponed indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD<\/p>\n<p>NSU\u2019s Stephens wins triple jump at Penn State National<\/p>\n<p>The Norfolk State men delivered a strong performance at the Penn State National meet.<\/p>\n<p>Kristopher Stephens captured the Spartans\u2019 lone victory, winning the triple jump at 15.08 meters (about 49 feet, 6 inches). Daniel Mathenge, in the 5,000 meters, placed third in 14 minutes, 46.71 seconds, while Lewis Too followed at 14:49.78.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Basking paced NSU in the 200 meters, finishing third in 21.67, while Lavontay Bond placed fourth in 21.68.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick Winfield earned seventh place in the 200 meters in 21.65. Donovan Terry finished seventh in the 400 at 48.63, while Winfield was 13th in 48.91.<\/p>\n<p>In the 60 meters, Basking placed 12th in 6.91, while Antoinne Smith followed in 13th at 6.92.<\/p>\n<p>In the high jump Xavier McGreal placed eighth, Cancelor Watson ninth and Chazden Wilson 10th, with each clearing 1.91 meters (about 6 feet, 3 inches). Sophomore pole vaulter Landon Walker was ninth after clearing 4.45 meters.<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s portion of the Penn State National, NSU\u2019s Daena Dyer placed ninth in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.74 after advancing to the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p>Norfolk State recorded three top-15 finishes in the field events. Yowome Ayim placed 11th in the triple jump at 11.46 meters. Freshman Emma Svetiev followed with a 12th-place finish in the pole vault by clearing 3.30 meters, while Essence Shaw earned 15th place in the high jump by clearing 1.60 meters.<\/p>\n<p>Sonia Koech paced the Spartans in the 5,000 meters, placing 10th in 18 minutes, 3.07 seconds. Abigael Chebet finished 16th in 19:04.51.<\/p>\n<p>James Madison\u2019s Christine Fitzgerald, a Maury High alumna, moved up to seventh in the Dukes\u2019 record book in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 55.96 for fourth place. She and Great Bridge graduate Kadence Wilson were half of a 4\u00d7400 relay that ran a 3:45.93 for fourth in JMU history in the event.<\/p>\n<p>Also in the women\u2019s long jump, JMU\u2019s Bria Byrd, another Maury graduate, leaped 5.94 meters (19-6) for bronze.<\/p>\n<p>COLLEGE WRESTLING<\/p>\n<p>No. 7 Hokies handle No. 8 Wolfpack<\/p>\n<p>No. 7 Virginia Tech (8-2, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) downed No. 8 NC State 21-12 before a sold-out Reynolds Coliseum crowd of 5,500, the Hokies\u2019 first victory in Raleigh since 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie Ventresca, ranked third nationally at 125 pounds, won 3-2 by riding time in overtime over fifth-ranked Vincent Robinson to start the meet at 125 pounds for Tech.<\/p>\n<p>Wins by Aaron Seidel (seventh at 133 pounds), Collin Gaj (ninth at 149), Ethen Miller (16th at 157) and Jaden Bullock (32nd at 184) gave the Hokies an 18-9 lead.<\/p>\n<p>Sonny Sasso (16th at 197) clinched the triumph with an 11-10 victory over 25th-ranked Patrick Brophy.<\/p>\n<p>UVA cruises past Duke<\/p>\n<p>Virginia (9-6, 1-3 ACC) defeated Duke 28-9 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>Gable Porter and Colton Washleski each picked up his 18th win of the season, with Washleski \u2014 ranked 32nd at 157 \u2014 taking a 12-3 major decision to open the night and Porter winning by a 15-0 technical fall at 141.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Rocco Hayes improved to 3-0 in dual action with his 12-1 win at 125 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>The Blue Devils fell to 6-10, 0-3.<\/p>\n<p>COLLEGE MEN\u2019S VOLLEYBALL<\/p>\n<p>Marlins prevail twice<\/p>\n<p>Virginia Wesleyan (6-2) achieved a pair of 3-0 victories in Frederick, Maryland. First, the Marlins defeated homestanding Hood 25-14, 25-10, 26-24, and then they handled Houghton 25-12, 25-14, 25-13.<\/p>\n<p>Against Hood, Grant Younie had seven kills and JaMarhe Wills had six kills, three digs and two aces. Siah Hill had six kills and four digs.<\/p>\n<p>Against Monmouth, Wills had 15 kills, eight digs and two aces, Younie had six kills and Carlyle Campbell had eight kills.<\/p>\n<p>Gallaudet stops Regent<\/p>\n<p>Gallaudet defeated Regent 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) at Randolph-Macon\u2019s Crenshaw Gym in Ashland.<\/p>\n<p>For the Royals (1-4), Jaxson Gray and Keith Larkin had six kills apiece, and Lucas Whitman had 17 assists and nine digs. The Bison\u2019s Zachary Bippus had 10 kills and 15 digs.<\/p>\n<p>COLLEGE MEN\u2019S LACROSSE<\/p>\n<p>Hampton drops opener despite freshman\u2019s hat trick<\/p>\n<p>Mercer beat Hampton 18-9 in Macon, Georgia, in the season opener for both teams. Anthony Bardonille Jr. paced the Pirates with three goals in his first college game, the first hat trick from a Hampton freshman since the 2018 season. He also had three assists.<\/p>\n<p>Darius Stanley and Maliik Wood registered two goals each for Hampton in Vincent Culpepper\u2019s HU coaching debut. The Pirates are seeking their first victory since going 6-5 in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>COLLEGE WOMEN\u2019S TENNIS<\/p>\n<p>W&amp;M blanks NSU<\/p>\n<p>William &amp; Mary shut out Norfolk State 7-0 at McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center in the season opener for both squads, getting singles victories from Sia Chaudry, Tilda Larsson, Francesca Davis, Mira Kernagis, Rebeka Svabikova and Alexia Gonzalez-Galino.<\/p>\n<p>Norfolk State\u2019s Yuliya Yurkova and Ines Sabadie won 6-3 at the top doubles spot, but the Tribe took the doubles point with victories from the pairs of Kernagis\/Gonzalez-Galino and Emma Pell\/Yaelle Vaissaud.<\/p>\n<p>CNU named C2C favorite<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Newport, which shared the No. 24 ranking with New York University in the Division III preseason poll, was named the favorite to win its third consecutive Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference title. UC Santa Cruz was picked second and Mary Washington, the nation\u2019s No. 39 team, third.<\/p>\n<p>COLLEGE MEN\u2019S TENNIS<\/p>\n<p>ODU beats Norfolk State<\/p>\n<p>Old Dominion defeated Norfolk State 4-3 on Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center\u2019s indoor courts, improving the Monarchs to 4-2. They had beaten Richmond 6-1 earlier Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Norfolk State played the Monarchs much more evenly than in past seasons, an indicator that the Spartans could be a threat to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. ODU has won the last three Sun Belt championships.<\/p>\n<p>Against NSU, ODU took the doubles point and got singles victories from Felix Obermair, Aryan Saleh and Piet Steveker on lines 3, 4 and 5, respectively. NSU\u2019s victors were Patryk Kowal at 1, Marcin Andrzejczak at 2 and Marcin Dojczynski at 6.<\/p>\n<p>Captains chosen as conference favorite<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Newport was named as a narrow favorite to repeat its Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference title, while 2025 runner-up Mary Washington was projected second.
