However, the Steelers still need an offensive coordinator, and three candidates have been identified for the job: Minnesota Vikings pass game coordinator/tight ends coach Brian Angelichio, New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien, and Dallas Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells.

Angelichio has been an NFL assistant coach for 14 seasons, including the last four with the Vikings, but never an offensive coordinator. He has also coached with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2012-13), Cleveland Browns (2014-15), Green Bay Packers (2016-18), Washington (2019), and Carolina Panthers (2020). McCarthy was the Packers’ head coach during Angelichio’s three seasons with Green Bay.

Angelichio, 53, had a five-year stint as the tight ends coach (2006-10) with Pitt as part of 16 seasons as a college assistant. He began his career at SUNY-Brockport in 1995 and had stints at Ithaca and Rutgers.

Tolzien, 38, was an NFL quarterback for seven seasons with the San Francisco 49ers (2011-12), Packers (2013-15), and Indianapolis Colts (2016-17). He appeared in just 10 games and started four in his career. Tolzien and McCarthy also overlapped in Green Bay.

During McCarthy’s five-year stint with the Cowboys, Tolzien was on the coaching staff each season before joining the Saints in 2025. Tolzien spent the 2019 season at the college level, serving as an analyst at Wisconsin, his alma mater.

Wells, with McCarthy for five years in Dallas, and Brian Schottenheimer then retained him on the Cowboys’ staff this season. Wells has been an NFL assistant since 2012, spending eight seasons with the New York Giants and six with the Cowboys.

Wells, 42, began his coaching career with a two-year stint as an assistant at Scotlandville High School in his hometown of Baton Rouge, La., from 2006-07. He then spent the next four years on LSU’s staff.

Arthur Smith was Pittsburgh’s offensive coordinator for the last two seasons but has moved on to the same job at Ohio State. The Steelers were just 25th in the NFL in total offense this season when they won the AFC North title for the first time since 2020 before losing to the Houston Texans in a Wild Card playoff game.

Steeler Roundtable also offers a fan community and message board.
