{"id":721882,"date":"2026-02-01T17:42:17","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T17:42:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/721882\/"},"modified":"2026-02-01T17:42:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T17:42:17","slug":"ex-jets-gm-who-drafted-sam-darnold-reflects-on-teams-decision-to-trade-him","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/721882\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-Jets GM Who Drafted Sam Darnold Reflects on Team&#8217;s Decision to Trade Him"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5v\">As quarterback Sam Darnold prepares for his long-awaited trip to the Super Bowl next week, the Jets general manager who drafted him with the third overall pick in 2018 has opened up about the bittersweet emotions he feels watching the quarterback succeed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5y\">\u201cI was always kind of sad that Sam wasn&#8217;t able to fulfill that potential in New York,\u201d Mike Maccagnan, who served as the Gang Green GM from 2015 to 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/47757331\/new-york-jets-gm-maccagnan-believed-sam-darnold-super-bowl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told ESPN this week<\/a>, in his first interview since his firing in 2019. \u201cThat&#8217;s where he started his journey, and, in an ideal world, he would&#8217;ve finished it there.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"61\">\u201cBut it wasn&#8217;t meant to be, and he had to go on his own journey to grow and develop in different places. It makes me feel good that he&#8217;s fulfilling his potential. It&#8217;s not necessarily vindication. In our business, when you see something, and it turns out the way you envisioned it, it makes you feel good. I think every scout probably feels that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"64\">Although Darnold seemed like \u201cThe Guy\u201d for New York at the start of his rookie season, the team would still finish that year 4\u201312. Maccagnan and then-coach Todd Bowles were fired, and Darnold was, eventually, traded to the Panthers, where he also struggled before moving to the 49ers, then the Vikings and now the Seahawks. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6a\">In the interview, Maccagnan told ESPN&#8217;s Rich Cimini that he wishes the Jets had given Darnold more of a chance before trading him away and drafting rookie Zach Wilson in his place. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6d\">\u201cMy personal opinion: I would&#8217;ve liked to have seen him get a full opportunity there,\u201d Maccagnan said. \u201cBut, at the end of the day, I wasn&#8217;t in that building, so I can&#8217;t say, \u2018They should&#8217;ve done this, this and this.\u2019 I wasn&#8217;t around. But I was saddened to see them trade him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6g\">Maccagnan also admitted that, although he knows his Jets tenure was far from perfect, he \u201cnever second-guessed\u201d his belief in Darnold. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6j\">\u201cI always felt he was the one I got right,\u201d the scout said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6m\">As the NFL world continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6584516\/2025\/09\/02\/nfl-first-round-quarterback-busts\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawPsYTJleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFBVzRtbDBjVEw0MTNKM1gyc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHtTt0jfM37Cvn-zNzU4-UqWGtqNZEQL_qI4powAO8EGda4AZ9jmX8hwPNU9l_aem_rF-UmM4xE7c-YTX1OlgwbQ&amp;source=fbhq&amp;utm_campaign=facebookhq&amp;utm_medium=social\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">debate how much of quarterback success<\/a> can be attributed to the player and how much can be attributed to the team, Darnold&#8217;s story emerges as one of both hope and caution. Sure, sometimes a top-ten pick just doesn&#8217;t work out &#8230; but sometimes, with the right tools, that top-ten pick can find a way to succeed elsewhere.
