Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward<\/a> became one of the first players to publicly react to Todd Monken\u2019s hiring, saying he\u2019s excited about what the veteran coach can do for an offense that struggled last season.<\/p>\n After an extensive coaching search, the Browns ultimately chose Monken<\/a> to replace two-time Coach of the Year Kevin Stefanski. Monken brings nearly four decades of coaching experience across the college and NFL levels, most recently serving as the Baltimore Ravens\u2019 offensive coordinator for the past three seasons. However, the Cleveland job marks the first NFL head coaching opportunity of his career.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve seen some stats on how he\u2019s helped Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry<\/a>,\u201d Ward said during an appearance on ESPN<\/a>. \u201cThey\u2019ve had some of their best seasons under Todd Monken. I\u2019m just looking forward to us having an amazing offense.\u201d<\/p>\n Ward also understood the reasoning behind the hire, noting the Browns\u2019 offense never found its footing last season, ranking near the bottom of the league in every major category. Cleveland managed just 262.1 yards and 16.4 points per game.<\/p>\n \u201cWe kinda struggled on that end of the field when we were out there during the season,\u201d Ward said. \u201cBut I\u2019m just looking forward to playing better, and all of us playing better together \u2014 and looking forward to him being our new head coach.\u201d<\/p>\n Browns DE Myles Garrett Still Silent on Monken Hire<\/p>\n Ward was among the players to back defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz for a head coaching job at the end of last season\u2019s 5-12 campaign. Schwartz was overlooked for the job in favor of Monken and reportedly stormed out of the building<\/a> after being informed of the news. He\u2019s under contract for next season but his status is uncertain<\/a>.<\/p>\n Schwartz has resided over the Browns\u2019 elite unit for the past three seasons. Cleveland finished last season ranked No. 4 in the NFL<\/a> in yards allowed per game (283.6).<\/p>\n \u201cI have so much love and respect for coach Schwartz,\u201d Ward said<\/a>. \u201cI would highly recommend coach Schwartz for a head coaching job here, definitely. \u2026 He\u2019s helped my game tremendously, puts us in great position, great leader. I can\u2019t say enough great things about him, but I think he\u2019s a guy who you want in a coach and somebody to lead a team.\u201d<\/p>\n Another player who publicly backed Schwartz is superstar pass-rusher Myles Garrett<\/a>. He has yet to comment on the hire, providing just a cryptic meme on social media since the hire. Garrett also pulled out of the Pro Bowl<\/a>, meaning he may not be speaking to the media anytime soon.<\/p>\n Browns HC Todd Monken Meets With Shedeur Sanders<\/p>\n The first player Monken met with at the Browns\u2019 facility<\/a> after being hired was Pro Bowl-bound quarterback Shedeur Sanders<\/a>. The two shared an embrace and a few words earlier in the week.<\/p>\n \u201cHey, we tried to draft your (expletive) last year, for God\u2019s sake,\u201d Monken said<\/a>, referencing Sanders telling the Ravens not to draft him<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s all worked out. You remember that, right? Someday we\u2019ll get a chance to talk about that.\u201d<\/p>\n One of the first major decisions Schwartz will have to make is around Sanders and the quarterback position. Sanders started seven games as a rookie, passing for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The Browns have said they\u2019ll explore all avenues this offseason to solidify the position.
