{"id":723354,"date":"2026-02-02T08:35:19","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T08:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/723354\/"},"modified":"2026-02-02T08:35:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T08:35:19","slug":"steelers-coaching-staff-tracker-mike-mccarthy-pittsburgh-connections-abound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/723354\/","title":{"rendered":"Steelers Coaching Staff Tracker: Mike McCarthy, Pittsburgh Connections Abound"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/mike-mccarthy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mike McCarthy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Mike McCarthy<\/a>\u2019s first coaching staff with the Pittsburgh Steelers is coming into shape, with several moves made this week, and several more on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a tracker of every move so far, and which positions remain un-filled:<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Offensive Coordinator \u2013 vacant<\/p>\n<p>Three candidates have been identified for this position so far: Minnesota Vikings passing game coordinator <a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/brian-angelichio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Brian Angelichio;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Brian Angelichio<\/a>, New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach <a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/scott-tolzien\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Scott Tolzien;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Scott Tolzien<\/a> and Dallas Cowboys tight ends coach <a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/lunda-wells\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Lunda Wells;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Lunda Wells<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The interview of Wells, when it is complete, will satisfy the team\u2019s Rooney Rule requirement for this position. Tolzien won\u2019t be available to interview until after he coaches in the Senior Bowl on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Quarterbacks Coach \u2013 Tom Arth<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/tom-arth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tom Arth;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Tom Arth<\/a> is one of three coaches to be retained from the final staff of Mike Tomlin. Arth played quarterback for McCarthy in Green Bay in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Running Backs Coach \u2013 Ramon Chinyoung<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/ramon-chinyoung\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ramon Chinyoung;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Ramon Chinyoung<\/a> comes to the Steelers from the Dallas Cowboys, where he served as an assistant offensive line coach and offensive quality control coach under McCarthy in 2023-24, and then remained on the staff in 2025 under Brian Schottenheimer.<\/p>\n<p>Wide Receivers Coach \u2013 Adam Henry<\/p>\n<p>The Steelers brought <a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/adam-henry\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Adam Henry;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Adam Henry<\/a> in from the Buffalo Bills, where he spent the last three seasons as wide receivers coach. Before that, he spent one year at Indiana, and was wide receivers coach under McCarthy for the Cowboys from 2020-21.<\/p>\n<p>Title Unknown \u2013 James Campen<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/james-campen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:James Campen;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">James Campen<\/a>, 61, will be the veteran on the offensive coaching staff. He was already on the coaching staff in Green Bay when McCarthy arrived in 2006, and the two stayed together all the way until McCarthy\u2019s depart in 2018. Campen did not join him in Dallas, instead catching for the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers over the last few years.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>It seems likely that Campen will have a title like senior offensive assistant or offensive run-game coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>Title Unknown \u2013 Jahri Evans<\/p>\n<p>A finalist for the <a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/pro-football-hall-of-fame\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Pro Football Hall of Fame;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Pro Football Hall of Fame<\/a> Class of 2026 as a player, <a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/jahri-evans\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Jahri Evans;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Jahri Evans<\/a> has been on the Saints coaching staff as an intern, offensive assistant and assistant offensive line coach since 2022. He played for McCarthy in his final NFL season in 2017 with the Packers.<\/p>\n<p>The Steelers will likely need to give Evans a promotion to a full position coach to justify poaching him from the Saints, so offensive line coach seems a likely title.<\/p>\n<p>Tight Ends Coach \u2013 Vacant<img alt=\"Pittsburgh Steelers Patrick Graham\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"788\" height=\"416\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/7da3a55dbea57e8b2842feace4b63536.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Patrick Graham at NY Football Giants Training Camp in 2016. \u2014 Tom Hanny<\/p>\n<p>Defensive Coordinator \u2013 Patrick Graham<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/patrick-graham\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Patrick Graham;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Patrick Graham<\/a> has extensive experience as an NFL defensive coordinator. The Yale alum is considered one of the brightest defensive-minded head coaches in the game, and has a reputation for doing more with less with some franchises that have not heavily invested in defense.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Graham mostly cut his teeth with Bill Belichick\u2019s New England Patriots, but spent one season as McCarthy\u2019s defensive coordinator with the Packers in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Defensive Passing Game Coordinator \u2013 Jason Simmons<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/jason-simmons\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Jason Simmons;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Jason Simmons<\/a> also interviewed for the defensive coordinator position, but with the Washington Commanders making a chance at defensive coordinator, he was allowed to return to his former team, the Steelers, in a lateral move. Simmons got his coaching start for McCarthy\u2019s Packers from 2011-19,<\/p>\n<p>Secondary Coach \u2013 Vacant<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/gerald-alexander\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Gerald Alexander;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Gerald Alexander<\/a> was expected to be a holdover here, having worked for Graham with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024, but instead, he <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/steelers-lose-promising-coach-nfc-170233793.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:took a promotion to defensive passing game coordinator;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">took a promotion to defensive passing game coordinator<\/a> to work with <a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/brian-flores\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Brian Flores;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Brian Flores<\/a> once again in Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Linebackers Coach \u2013 Scott McCurley<\/p>\n<p>A New Castle, Pa., native, <a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/scott-mccurley\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Scott McCurley;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Scott McCurley<\/a> has been coaching in the NFL since 2006. All but one of those seasons were under McCarthy. He stayed with him in Green Bay for 13 years and then moved to Dallas for four more. When McCarthy took the 2025 season off, McCurley came home to Pittsburgh, one year ahead of his longtime boss.<\/p>\n<p>Defensive Line Coach \u2013 VacantOutside Linebackers Coach \u2013 Vacant<\/p>\n<p>The Steelers are set to interview Texas Tech outside linebackers coach <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/steelers-interview-fast-rising-college-233426670.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:C.J. Ah You.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">C.J. Ah You.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Special Teams Coordinator \u2013 Vacant<\/p>\n<p>The Steelers interviewed former Cleveland Browns special teams coach and Pittsburgh native <a href=\"https:\/\/steelersnow.com\/tag\/bubba-ventrone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bubba Ventrone;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Bubba Ventrone <\/a>for this position, but he ended up taking the job with the Los Angeles Rams instead.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The Steelers also interview former Buffalo Bills special teams coordinator <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/steelers-complete-second-interview-special-193509732.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Matthew Smiley;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Smiley<\/a> for the position formerly held by longtime coach Danny Smith.<\/p>\n<p>Role TBD \u2013 Steve Scarnecchia<\/p>\n<p>The Steelers have hired former Atlanta Falcons chief of staff of coaching operations Steve Scarnecchia, the son of former New England Patriots legendary offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia, for\u00a0Mike McCarthy\u2019s\u00a0new staff.
