Giants<\/a> legend Lawrence Taylor<\/a> spoke to the team \u2014 or at least to its defensive players \u2014 on Thursday, as coach Brian Daboll<\/a>\u2018s fourth (and perhaps final<\/a>) group continues with spring workouts. <\/p>\n

The Giants posted<\/a> a video of the moment on Twitter. As Lawrence walked toward the front of the room to deliver his casual speech, he greeted players, and Daboll introduced him as \u201cthe greatest NFL player.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHey, guys,\u201d Taylor said to players as he walked by. \u201cWhat\u2019s happening?\u201d <\/p>\n

Then, from somewhere off camera, Daboll couldn\u2019t resist making a wisecrack directed at his prized rookie pass rusher. <\/p>\n

\u201cAbdul, you know this guy?\u201d Daboll said. <\/p>\n

Everyone laughed. <\/p>\n

Taylor smiled, stopped for a bit, turned to his right and shook Abdul Carter\u2019s hand. Carter also smiled and chuckled. <\/p>\n

Then Daboll introduced \u201cMr. Lawrence Taylor,\u201d and Taylor spoke to the players from the front of the room. <\/p>\n

Daboll\u2019s wisecrack comes in the wake of Carter \u2014 an outside linebacker whom the Giants just drafted third overall, out of Penn State \u2014 attempting to wear Taylor\u2019s retired No. 56 and then Phil Simms\u2019 retired No. 11. (Carter wore No. 11 at Penn State, like Micah Parsons did.) <\/p>\n

Both Taylor and Simms (through a vote by his family) wisely said no. Carter will wear No. 51 \u2014 a decision he made before rookie minicamp. <\/p>\n

Bottom line: Unretiring a retired number \u2014 as the Giants did last year, with No. 1, for prized rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers \u2014 is foolish. <\/p>\n
