Add The Sporting News as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Preferred Source by clicking here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Preferred Source by clicking here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the top pending free agents for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/nfl\/washington-commanders\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Washington Commanders;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Washington Commanders<\/a> this offseason is wide receiver Deebo Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Because of injuries, Samuel was easily the most reliable target in the passing game last season and he showed he&#8217;s still got some gas left in the tank after many had predicted his career demise going into 2025.<\/p>\n<p>But with general manager Adam Peters&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commanders.com\/news\/5-takeaways-dan-quinn-adam-peters-joint-press-conference\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:mandate to get younger and faster;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">mandate to get younger and faster<\/a>, re-signing a 30-year-old wide receiver might not be in the cards.<\/p>\n<p>If not, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardbarker.com\/nfl\/articles\/25_bold_predictions_for_the_2026_nfl_offseason\/s1__43385334#slide_18\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:YardBarker&#039;s Seth Trachtman;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">YardBarker&#8217;s Seth Trachtman<\/a> predicts Samuel will wind up with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/nfl\/las-vegas-raiders\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Las Vegas Raiders;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Las Vegas Raiders<\/a> in free agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Samuel performed well in a disappointing season for Washington with 802 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns, but it remains to be seen if he will return,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The Raiders are among the teams desperate for wideout help, as the team looks to support likely No. 1 overall draft choice Fernando Mendoza.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The Raiders are at the top of the list of teams that need a wide receiver, and that&#8217;s especially true with Fernando Mendoza expected to land in Las Vegas in April as the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL draft.<\/p>\n<p>Las Vegas has an elite playmaker in tight end Brock Bowers, but the wide receivers room is a mess and Bowers needs more help.<\/p>\n<p>The first years of Jack Bech and Dont&#8217;e Thornton were bad, so the jury is still out on both, and the most proven receiver in the group who is under contract is Tre Tucker, who is a No. 3 wide receiver, at best.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s simply not enough to provide support for tight end Brock Bowers.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Samuel isn&#8217;t the No. 1 wideout the Raiders need, but he&#8217;s still a good No. 2 and signing him would be a strong start toward a much-needed revamp in Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel is also an ideal fit for a young quarterback, as he&#8217;s a yards-after-catch monster in the short-to-intermediate areas of the field.<\/p>\n<p>Spotrac <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nfl\/player\/market-value\/_\/id\/29071\/deebo-samuel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:estimates Samuel&#039;s next contract;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">estimates Samuel&#8217;s next contract<\/a> at a two-year, $26 million deal, which will be no problem for a Raiders team that is <a href=\"https:\/\/overthecap.com\/salary-cap-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:loaded with $91.5 million;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">loaded with $91.5 million<\/a> in cap space.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, the Raiders sign Samuel to a two-year deal with an out in the second year just in case he hits a wall.<\/p>\n<p>In the mean time, the Raiders can continue looking for more permanent solutions at the position while Samuel bridges the gap.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Commanders $26 million free agent predicted to leave Washington for Raiders originally appeared on The Sporting News.
