The Buffalo Bills\u2019 new defensive coordinator<\/a> spoke on Thursday about his vision for the team\u2019s defensive unit and the relationships he plans to build with players.<\/p>\n It comes amid some major coaching changes, following the team\u2019s loss in the playoffs. Jim Leonhard, who played a decade in the NFL as a safety before becoming a coach, said he envisions a defense that\u2019s \u201cconstantly evolving\u201d throughout a game and a season.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re going to be aggressive. We\u2019re not going to be reckless. There is a right and a wrong way to attack quarterbacks in the NFL and it changes a little bit week to week based on their skillsets and you have to play to the strengths of your players,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Leonhard began his career with the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2005 and played his second-to-last season with the Bills in 2013. He said that, during his time playing football, he\u2019s seen how important it is for coaches to build trust with players.<\/p>\n \u201cI went from team to team a lot. I went to a lot of different locker rooms. I was like, how can I earn the trust and respect of this group quickly? That was my goal going in and that will be my goal as a coach,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n Leonhard\u2019s conference comes about a week after Joe Brady, the Bills\u2019 new head coach, addressed reporters<\/a> for the first time. Brady said he plans to build upon the foundation that former head coach Sean McDermott laid out. The Bills owner, Terry Pegula,\u00a0decided to fire<\/a>\u00a0McDermott after nine seasons following the loss to the Denver Broncos in the playoffs.<\/p>\n Leonhard said he has upmost respect of all McDermott has accomplished and the roster he has built.
