Shanahan finished in fifth place, receiving only six first-place votes and 140 total points despite a 2025 NFL season <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportsbayarea.com\/nfl\/san-francisco-49ers\/kyle-shanahan-john-lynch-locker-room\/1908512\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that exceeded expectations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">AP NFL Coach of the Year:<br \/>1. Mike Vrabel 302 points, 19 first-place votes<br \/>2. Liam Coen 239 16<br \/>3. Mike Macdonald 191 8<br \/>4. Ben Johnson 145 1<br \/>5. Kyle Shanahan 140 6<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rob Maaddi (@RobMaaddi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RobMaaddi\/status\/2019608801239003496?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">February 6, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finishing ahead of Shanahan were Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson, Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald and Jacksonville Jaguars coach Liam Coen.<\/p>\n<p>Shanahan led the 49ers to an impressive 12-5 record despite a flurry of injuries the team experienced throughout the 2025 regular season.<\/p>\n<p>As the No. 6 seed, San Francisco defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC wild-card playoff round but fell short against the Seahawks in the divisional playoff round.<\/p>\n<p>Shanahan came close to winning the NFL Coach of the Year award twice as the runner-up in 2019 and in 2022.
