{"id":734198,"date":"2026-02-06T20:31:19","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T20:31:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/734198\/"},"modified":"2026-02-06T20:31:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T20:31:19","slug":"how-dolphins-want-to-get-rid-of-tua-tagovailoa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/734198\/","title":{"rendered":"How Dolphins want to get rid of Tua Tagovailoa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Dolphins hope there is anyone willing to give up anything for Tua Tagovailoa.<\/p>\n<p>With the veteran quarterback\u2019s future in Miami murky following two disappointing years, the latter resulting in Mike McDaniel\u2019s ouster this offseason, the Dolphins are attempting to set their offseason strategy for how they will handle the game\u2019s most important position.<\/p>\n<p>Miami\u2019s most desirable outcome would be to trade Tagovailoa, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/sports\/nfl\/miami-dolphins\/article314566436.html?taid=69851ce8be49b700014b1f39&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to the Miami Herald<\/a>, and they could potentially keep him if they find no keepers.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38407655\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/tua-tagovailoa-1-miami-dolphins-118266918.jpg\" alt=\"Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in his white uniform and helmet warming up on the field.\" class=\"wp-image-38407655\"  \/>Has Tua Tagovailoa played his last game with the Dolphins? Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The Dolphins would prefer they do not release him and take the massive cap hit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d be surprised if Tua is in Miami,\u201d NFL Network\u2019s Ian Rapoport <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DavidFurones_\/status\/2019242833463636102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told Jim Rome<\/a> on Wednesday. \u201cI think they can trade him, but they\u2019re going to eat a lot of the contract do that\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tagovailoa has three more years on the four-year, $212.4 million contract extension he signed prior to the 2024 season, but it seems very likely he won\u2019t see that deal through.<\/p>\n<p>The Dolphins benched him for seventh-rounder Quinn Ewers at the end of the year, and he even acknowledged he could use a fresh start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would be good with it,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/05\/sports\/tua-tagovailoa-ready-for-fresh-start-away-from-dolphins\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he said after the season ended<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s new front office structure of general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and coach Jeff Hafley will now have to make the pivotal call on how to proceeed.<\/p>\n<p>Tagovailoa carries a $56.3 million cap it for next year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/47598\/tua-tagovailoa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">per spotrac.com<\/a>, which is more than his play is worth after last year\u2019s 20-touchdown, 15-interception showing.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38407664\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/miami-dolphins-head-coach-jeff-119451297.jpg\" alt=\"Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley speaks at a press conference.\" class=\"wp-image-38407664\"  \/>New Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley. Sam Navarro-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Miami would surely love to move him since it would save $11.1 million with a pre-June 1 trade and $42.9 million trade post-June 1, but his contract and play doesn\u2019t make him appealing.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s always that one team that could do something unwise, but there are a lot of factors working against a potential deal.<\/p>\n<p>That would leave the Dolphins with the option to either cut him or keep him.<\/p>\n<p>A source told the Miami Herald that the team has considered keeping him, but usually comments from a player saying they\u2019d be good to be traded are an indication that they\u2019ve come to the end of the road.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Cutting him before June 1 would leave the team with a dead cap hit of $99.2 million, while doing so after June 1 would spread that amount across 2026 ($67.4 million) and 2027 ($31.8 million).<\/p>\n<p>How Miami proceeds at quarterback will largely decide whether the team is involved in the hunt for the No. 1 pick in the hyped 2027 NFL Draft, which will include quarterback Arch Manning.<\/p>\n<p>Rapoport said Miami will sign another quarterback this offseason, mentioning Green Bay free agent Malik Willis, but it\u2019s unknown of it will be a backup or starter type.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Dolphins hope there is anyone willing to give up anything for Tua Tagovailoa.
