KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) -Wyandotte County commissioners voted 7-3<\/a> Thursday to approve a STAR bonds district that will house the Kansas City Chiefs\u2019 new domed stadium and finance its construction using sales taxes. <\/p>\n

The stadium will sit at the northeast corner of 126th and State Avenue near the Azura Amphitheater and is set to open in 2031. <\/p>\n

Residents living near the proposed site have mixed reactions to the development.<\/p>\n

Neighbors voice concerns and support <\/p>\n

John Wheeler, whose home sits near the land plot for the new stadium, said he has concerns about the project. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019ll be disturbing the peace a little bit,\u201d Wheeler said. \u201cKind of a way to take advantage of our tax system, to be honest. Cause they may say it doesn\u2019t affect our taxes, but it will, eventually.\u201d <\/p>\n

Wheeler also worried about traffic impacts, referencing the current Chiefs stadium in Missouri, where \u201cthe highway gets backed up and it would be the same thing here.\u201d <\/p>\n

Elizabeth Hampton, who was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas, supports bringing the Chiefs across the state line. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to bring a lot of traffic to the area, I think it will benefit the area financially as far as all the up-and-coming things that are being built in this area,\u201d Hampton said. \u201cWe don\u2019t have to drive 30 minutes to the Chiefs stadium and park so far away from home.\u201d <\/p>\n

Hampton said she loves seeing \u201cthe area up and coming, it\u2019s being complimented in the best way possible.\u201d <\/p>\n

Mayor addresses concerns <\/p>\n

Kansas City, Kansas, Mayor Christal Watson said she wants to address residents\u2019 concerns about the STAR bonds agreement. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not giving away the community,\u201d Watson said. \u201cWe have a deal that we need to be very careful how we execute it, how we negotiate it. And I feel like we are in a really good place with the state to be able to do that.\u201d <\/p>\n

Watson said there will be oversight over the next several years as the city prepares to welcome the Chiefs. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have made the best of some of the worst conditions. We have been a resilient community. That is what I am most excited about. Whether it is the Chiefs, whether it is the Royals, whether it is anybody coming into this community,\u201d Watson said. <\/p>\n

The mayor said Wyandotte County is open for business for developers and that this is the best way to grow Kansas City, Kansas. <\/p>\n
