{"id":735098,"date":"2026-02-07T05:57:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T05:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/735098\/"},"modified":"2026-02-07T05:57:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T05:57:20","slug":"todd-downing-doesnt-want-to-waste-super-bowl-2026-opportunity-with-patriots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/735098\/","title":{"rendered":"Todd Downing doesn&#8217;t want to &#8216;waste&#8217; Super Bowl 2026 opportunity with Patriots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SAN FRANCISCO \u2014 A year ago, Todd Downing was part of a terrible 5-12 season with the Jets. <\/p>\n<p>Now, he\u2019s in the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n<p>Downing is the Patriots wide receivers coach. <\/p>\n<p>He went to New England after a two-year stint with the Jets as the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, he took over the play-calling after five games as part of changes made when head coach Robert Saleh was fired.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a 25-year career of ups and downs,\u201d Downing said this week. \u201cI feel very fortunate to be here. It\u2019s such an awesome opportunity and I don\u2019t want to waste it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As for his time with the Jets, Downing said he really believed they had the right pieces to turn things around.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m definitely bummed out and disappointed that we weren\u2019t able to get things going in New York,\u201d Downing said. \u201cI really believed in my core that we had the right people to do the right things. When I took over as a play-caller, I was hoping I could steady things up. I am proud of some of the things we did after I took over. Bill Kostroun for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Downing said he remains in touch with many of the players and coaches he was with in New York and said he was rooting for guys like Saleh and Aaron Rodgers this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m always cheering those guys on,\u201d Downing said. \u201cHappy for Coach Saleh to have another opportunity in Tennessee. I\u2019m excited to see what Aaron\u2019s future is.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cory Durden did not really understand why the Giants waived him at the end of training camp last summer. <\/p>\n<p>Two days later, though, he was signed by the Patriots and he\u2019s now in the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cI got cut by New York right out of training camp, kind of a surprise a little bit because I was a backup the majority of camp,\u2019\u2019 Durden told The Post this week. \u201cGot signed here pretty fast, was on the practice squad my first day and then got signed to the active roster the next day and the rest has been pretty much history. I put together a pretty good year, playing good football and now trying to win a Super Bowl, that\u2019s the next goal.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0As it turned out, the Patriots saw something in Durden, a 27-year old defensive tackle. <\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38416315\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/new-england-patriots-defensive-tackle-118276763.jpg\" alt=\"New England Patriots defensive tackle Cory Durden (94) reacts to a defensive stop.\" class=\"wp-image-38416315\"  \/>Cory Durden reacts during the Patriots\u2019 Jan. 4 game against the Dolphins.
