GLENDALE \u2013 The Arizona Cardinals are in the market for a new quarterback, and a former Pro Bowler just hit the market. ESPN\u2019s Adam Schefter reported that the Atlanta Falcons are releasing QB Kirk Cousins when the new league year starts in March. The 37-year-old signed a massive four-year, $180 million deal in 2024 and will only have played out two years of the contract before hitting free agency.<\/p>\n

Arizona is expected to trade Kyler Murray this offseason, which leads to a chance Cousins could be brought in.<\/p>\n

Cousins released from Falcons:<\/p>\n

The Cardinals have made it unclear what the plan at quarterback will be in 2026. Last year\u2019s starter Jacoby Brissett is 33 years old and isn\u2019t the long term option. Cousins wouldn\u2019t be that option either, but this year\u2019s draft class is shallow in quarterback talent and could have the franchise take a flyer on the four-time Pro Bowler.<\/p>\n

Cousins has a proven track record of being a winning quarterback in this league, going 88-77-2 in his career. During the post-season press conference, owner Michael Bidwill and Monti Ossenfort made it clear that the organization is trying to win next year, which could lead to them signing Cousins to a one-year deal that could bridge themselves to the 2027 NFL draft.<\/p>\n

If the Cardinals brought in Cousins, it could help them at minimum compete for a wildcard spot and give new head coach Mike LaFleur an experienced quarterback to install his system. The 14-year NFL veteran hasn\u2019t had a losing season under center since 2020, which would be a massive improvement for Arizona. The franchise hasn\u2019t had a winning season since 2021, the same year it last made the playoffs.<\/p>\n

Since he\u2019ll be released, Cousins could only be seeking a minimum contract, making him a low-risk signing for the Cardinals. Early reports have made it apparent that Cousins could return to the Minnesota Vikings, a team he spent six years as a starter. However, Arizona could offer him a starting role, something Minnesota will be hesitant to give with quarterback J.J. McCarthy on the roster.<\/p>\n
