{"id":740105,"date":"2026-02-09T11:29:38","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T11:29:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/740105\/"},"modified":"2026-02-09T11:29:38","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T11:29:38","slug":"sam-darnold-and-seahawks-crush-patriots-to-win-super-bowl-lx","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/740105\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Darnold and Seahawks crush Patriots to win Super Bowl LX"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>SANTA CLARA\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2025-11-14\/sam-darnold-resurgence-with-seahawks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Darnold<\/a> did not really know what to say.<\/p>\n<p>So as the Seattle Seahawks quarterback stood on stage at Levi\u2019s Stadium after becoming a Super Bowl champion, he made a few comments thanking teammates and fans before ultimately boiling it down to this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust a job well done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The words were simple. Concise. And captured the essence of a player who traveled a road filled with disappointments and setbacks but always believed in himself.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Darnold was far from spectacular. But the former San Clemente High and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2026-02-06\/super-bowl-history-sam-darnold-is-uscs-first-starting-qb-in-game\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">USC star<\/a> played error-free, tossed a touchdown pass and let running back <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WalkKe00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kenneth Walker III<\/a>, kicker <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MyerJa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jason Myers<\/a> and a dominating defense do the rest in a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/static.www.nfl.com\/image\/upload\/v1770607907\/gamecenter\/404ef5b1-fa62-11f0-9442-5911216651e2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">29-13 victory<\/a> over the New England Patriots in <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/topic\/super-bowl-lvii\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Super Bowl LX<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was the Seahawks second Super Bowl title, their first since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>That Seahawks team featured the legendary <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/rams\/la-sp-rams-report-20171006-story.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cLegion of Boom\u201d defense<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s defense dubbed itself the \u201cDark Side.\u201d All-Pros do not abound. Individual personalities lean more toward quietly confident rather than brash.<\/p>\n<p>And on Sunday, it lit up the stadium by harassing Patriots quarterback <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2026-02-04\/is-patriots-qb-drake-maye-ready-for-the-super-bowl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Drake Maye<\/a> into three turnovers and sacking him six times.<\/p>\n<p>Linebacker Derick Hall forced a third-quarter fumble that turned the momentum. Safety Julian Love ended any real chance of a comeback with a fourth-quarter interception. Walker rushed for 135 yards and was voted the game\u2019s most valuable player, the first running back to win the award since Terrell Davis in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>But the story of the Seahawks\u2019 season revolved around Darnold.<\/p>\n<p>The third pick in the 2018 draft endured tough times with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers before he spent a season as the backup for the San Francisco 49ers. In 2024, he led the Minnesota Vikings to 14 victories but the team did not re-sign him.<\/p>\n<p>The Seahawks welcomed him with open arms, and he became the first former USC quarterback to start a Super Bowl.<\/p>\n<p>Is this what the Seahawks envisioned when they signed Darnold to a three-year deal with $55 million in guarantees?<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Seahawks coach Mike MacDonald holds the Vince Lombardi Trophy on stage in front of Sam Darnold and Kenneth Walker III.\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770636574_275_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Seahawks coach Mike MacDonald holds the Vince Lombardi Trophy on stage in front of Sam Darnold and Kenneth Walker III following a 29-13 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>(Eric Thayer \/ Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, absolutely,\u201d general manager John Schneider said in a celebratory locker room filled with cigar smoke and champagne. \u201cThe person, the leader \u2014 he\u2019s the ultimate competitor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Darnold was not nearly as sharp as he was in a pivotal Week 16 overtime victory over the Rams, and the NFC championship game against the Rams.<\/p>\n<p>But early in the fourth quarter, he connected with tight end AJ Barner for a touchdown that gave the Seahawks a 19-0 lead. He completed 19 of 38 passes for 202 yards. He did not have a pass intercepted. He did not fumble.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like I could have been a lot better,\u201d he said. \u201cFeel like we could have scored more points, to be quite frank. But again, we got the job done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A job well done by Darnold all season, teammates said.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold throws a pass during the second half against the New England Patriots.\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770636577_83_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold throws a pass during the second half against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>(Charlie Riedel \/ Associated Press)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the heartbeat,\u201d <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/rams\/story\/2026-02-07\/super-bowl-2026-rams-castoffs-leading-seahawks-vs-patriots\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">linebacker Ernest Jones IV<\/a> said. \u201cTruly the heartbeat of our team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/rams\/story\/2026-01-26\/cooper-kupp-other-former-rams-play-key-role-in-seahawks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Receiver Cooper Kupp<\/a> marveled at Darnold\u2019s \u201credemption story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if there\u2019s a quarterback in NFL history that\u2019s done what he\u2019s done,\u201d Kupp said after catching six passes for 61 yards.<\/p>\n<p>Kupp and Jones can speak with authority about redemption.<\/p>\n<p>Last March, the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/rams\/story\/2025-03-12\/rams-release-cooper-kupp-nfl-free-agency\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rams released Kupp<\/a>, the 2021 NFL offensive player of the year and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/rams\/story\/2022-02-13\/rams-receiver-cooper-kupp-mvp-super-bowl-lvi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most valuable player of Super Bowl LVI<\/a> at SoFi Stadium. He signed with his home state Seahawks and instantly became a veteran leader.<\/p>\n<p>Now he\u2019s a two-time Super Bowl champion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSounds pretty good,\u201d Kupp said, grinning. \u201cThat\u2019s unbelievable, man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe story that\u2019s been written, my story, I don\u2019t know if I could have written a better ending to this year. Some really tough times this year, and to be in this place, be able to go through this year with these guys, it\u2019s one of the most fun years I\u2019ve had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones started for the Rams in Super Bowl LVI as a rookie but rather than extending him after his third year, the team traded him to Tennessee before last season. The Titans later traded him to the Seahawks, who gave him a three-year extension last spring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing, man,\u201d Jones said of being a two-time champion. \u201cThose California Super Bowls \u2014 I like those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Darnold\u2019s touchdown pass, it appeared the Seahawks were on their way to the first shutout in Super Bowl history. But Maye came back and fired a touchdown pass to Mack Hollins, pulling the Patriots to within 12 points.<\/p>\n<p>Patriots fans perhaps envisioned a repeat of Super Bowl LI in 2017, when Tom Brady led the Patriots back from a 28-3 deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons.<\/p>\n<p>But the Seahawks made sure that was not going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Love picked off a Maye pass, and Myers kicked his final field goal to increase the lead to 22-7. Late in the fourth quarter, Witherspoon hit Maye, and Nwosu grabbed the ball in the air and returned it 45 yards for a 29-7 lead.<\/p>\n<p>The Seahawks were on their way to finishing the season with their 10th consecutive victory.<\/p>\n<p>Maye, runner-up to Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford for the NFL most valuable player award, completed 27 of 43 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey had applied some pressure where they got us a few times,\u201d Maye said, \u201cand we\u2019ve got to be better with the football and make better decisions and I\u2019ve got to make better throws when the game goes like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it was over, Darnold was holding the Vince Lombardi Trophy on stage.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, left, and running back Kenneth Walker III celebrate on stage.\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770636578_41_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, left, and running back Kenneth Walker III celebrate on stage after a 29-13 win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>(Kevin C. Cox \/ Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like, \u2018This thing\u2019s a lot lighter than I thought it was,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cBut it was great just to be able to hold that trophy and finally enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Darnold will enjoy something else: He will now forever be known as Super Bowl-champion Sam Darnold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s special, man,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to lie \u2014 it\u2019s a dream come true.
