Jacksonville Jaguars’<\/a>\u00a0cornerback Greg Newsome is set to be a free agent this upcoming offseason.<\/p>\n

So what might his next contract look like, and will the\u00a0Jaguars<\/a>\u00a0re-sign him?<\/p>\n

According to Spotrac<\/a>, Newsome is projected to earn a three-year deal as a free agent worth $27.06 million. That’s good for an average annual value of just over $9.0 million per season.<\/p>\n

In terms of player age, contract status, and statistical production, Keisean Nixon, Michael Carter II, and Jourdan Lewis were used by Spotrac as comparisons to determine what Newsome’s deal could be.<\/p>\n

The trade for Newsome, which included Tyson Campbell going to Cleveland, provided the Jaguars with some added salary cap flexibility<\/a> this offseason by moving on from Campbell’s contract.<\/p>\n

Newsome joined the Jaguars with very good ball production in his career and as someone who was thought to fit well with Anthony Campanile’s zone-heavy defense.<\/p>\n

However, the results in Jacksonville were mixed. Newsome allowed a completion rate of almost 70% with the Jaguars and 11.7 yards per catch<\/a>. He had just one pass breakup and one interception.<\/p>\n

On one hand, addressing the cornerback position should be one of the top needs for the Jaguars this offseason. Perhaps with a full offseason in Campanile’s scheme rather than learning it mid-season on the fly, the Jaguars could get more out of Newsome moving forward.<\/p>\n

But with that said, Travis Hunter will be back from injury, and if I’m the Jaguars, I’m prioritizing re-signing Montaric Brown over Newsome, especially at potentially $9 million per year.<\/p>\n
