Davison Igbinosun shows aggression and physicality on tape, playing with a high motor that will let receivers know when he wins a rep. At the Senior Bowl, he did not let his won reps go quietly, often screaming and talking trash after the rep.<\/p>\n
Igbinosun wins with his physicality, primarily in getting his hands on receivers and redirecting them. In press-man, he gets a quick jam early and controls the receiver throughout the route. If he gets a good jam, he has strong enough arms to stop the route early. If the receiver releases to the outside, he will use his arms to push them to the sideline, like on this rep at the top of the screen.<\/p>\n
This ability to press with physicality makes him difficult to beat in the red zone, and he clamps down on receivers early. It is hard to take advantage of his lower athleticism with less room to work, so he thrives in these short-area situations. Here he is in the slot, covering a corner route and breaking up the pass with good ball skills.<\/p>\n
He plays with the same physicality in off-man coverage. His play strength is very apparent on these reps, and the collisions he causes can destroy a receiver\u2019s route. When breaking back to the ball, he has a quick burst out of his stance and can clamp down on shorter passes. He has decent lateral quickness that can wall off receivers from going downfield, and his strong arms finish the job. He has patient feet that do not react too quickly, and he forces an incompletion on the bottom of the screen on this rep.<\/p>\n
While Igbinosun plays with great physicality, it is the only way he will win in the NFL. When he does not get a jam in press coverage, he lacks hip flexibility to wall off the receiver. He will struggle with shifty releases because of the lack of jam, though his long arms help him. His feet can get static in press and can get beat quickly. He recovered well in college, but some NFL speed will shock him when he gets beaten. In off-man, he will get burnt if there is no collision due to the lack of athleticism needed to wall off receivers. Ohio State knew he had these athletic limitations and lined him up in the boundary for almost every rep.<\/p>\n
In zone coverage, he does a great job, along with the entire Ohio State defense, of reading the quarterback\u2019s eyes. Sometimes it appears he is being lazy, but it is because the quarterback is not looking his way. As a flat defender, he uses his long arms to redirect the receiver, checks for any flat threats, and sinks if there are none. If the quarterback throws to the flat, he will rally and tackle.<\/p>\n
In Cover 3, he is not as effective. His feet get out of control, and he struggles to break back to the ball. He has good speed in his half-turn run, but when he must flip his hips to the sideline, he does not have great burst. The change of direction is average in cover 3, and a quick jab can get him out of control.<\/p>\n
On this play, Ohio State is playing basic cover 3 sky. He has 1 vertical threat and cannot get to the receiver\u2019s outside hip due to a quick jab, leading to an explosive play.<\/p>\n
Because of his aggressive play style, Igbinosun can commit penalties at the catch point and the collision point in off-man coverage. After committing 16 penalties in 2024, he cleaned up his game, but the issues still persist. When a player relies on collisions to be successful, they will commit more penalties.<\/p>\n
To pair that with weaker athletic ability than most corners, penalties will happen. Igbinosun has great coverage on this rep, but gets handsy at the catch point, leading to pass interference.<\/p>\n
CONCLUSION<\/p>\n
Davison Igbinosun is a fun, aggressive corner who plays with great physicality and long arms. He fits the run extremely well and is a good tackler. However, he lacks the elite athleticism needed to be a lockdown cornerback in the NFL. He will be a serviceable starter that provides good support in all areas, but will get beaten at times due to weaker movement skills. I have no doubt he can find a role for himself and always play with a high motor, but the quick and shifty receivers will give him trouble.<\/p>\n
