News broke on Feb. 4 that Jeff Stoutland, the Philadelphia Eagles\u2019 run game and offensive line coach, will not return to the team next season. The report from ESPN\u2019s Tim McManus<\/a>\u00a0came as a complete shock to fans.<\/p>\n

Stoutland has coached Philadelphia\u2019s offensive line since 2013. During his tenure, he\u2019s played a key role in developing one of the league\u2019s best units. Jason Kelce<\/a>, Jordan Mailata<\/a>, and Mekhi Becton<\/a> are just some of the players who greatly benefited from Soutland\u2019s guidance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Following the announcement, Mailata, a current star for the Eagles\u2019 offensive line, said he is \u201cheartbroken<\/a>\u201d by the news. Additionally, veterans Lane Johnson<\/a> and Landon Dickerson<\/a> are reportedly contemplating retirement<\/a>, which is likely tied to Stoutland\u2019s departure.<\/p>\n

This unexpected exit is shaking up Philadelphia\u2019s offseason plans and has left fans with many questions.<\/p>\n

The timing of Stoutland\u2019s exit in relation to the hiring of new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion may not be a coincidence.<\/p>\n

NBC Sports\u2019 Dave Zangaro noted<\/a> how Mannion\u2019s staff-building decisions this offseason could indicate a significant shift Philadelphia\u2019s offensive identity for 2026.\u00a0 Rumors are circulating that Mannion wants the reins of the offense entirely to himself. As he brings in several new coaches and staff members who share his vision, perhaps Stoutland saw the writing on the wall that changes are coming, and he wasn\u2019t going to be a part of them.<\/p>\n

Stoutland\u2019s Irritations and Shortcomings<\/p>\n

Stoutland\u2019s frustrations with Philadelphia\u2019s operation date back to last season.\u00a0He was reportedly irritated<\/a> with the\u00a0Eagles\u2019 offense and his lack of contribution to the group towards the end of the year. In these reports, it\u2019s said that head coach Nick Sirianni and former offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo had complete control over the offense in the final few games.<\/p>\n

Cayden Steele at NJ.com<\/a> wrote about how the divide late last season played a role in the separation. According to Steele, Stoutland was \u201cnot consulted<\/a>\u201d enough regarding changes in the run game.<\/p>\n

That isn\u2019t to say Stoutland was blameless. This season\u2019s<\/a> offensive line is one of the weakest he\u2019s coached in his 13 years with the Eagles. However, a lot of that can be chalked up to injury. Johnson missed significant time, and Dickerson played through lingering injuries all year. Still, that doesn\u2019t explain the regression from Mailata and Cam Jurgens<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But even in a down season, the Eagles\u2019 offensive line still graded as the seventh-best in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What is Mannion\u2019s Plan?<\/p>\n

Mannion has instead brought in a slew of new offensive coaches. He is expected to incorporate a \u201cwest coast\u201d type of offense, similar to that of Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan.<\/p>\n

Chris Kuper will be the new offensive line coach to replace Stoutland. Some of the other new faces\u00a0include Josh Grizzard as the passing game coordinator, and Ryan Mahaffey as the Tight Ends Coach and running game coordinator.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mannion has close connections to Mahaffey and Kuper already. Mahaffey coached with Mannion in Green Bay, and Kuper was a coach in Minnesota in 2023 while Mannion was still playing quarterback.<\/p>\n

What Does the Future Hold?<\/p>\n

There\u2019s been\u00a0no indication of Jeff Stoutland\u2019s next move yet. The term \u201cleaving\u201d indicates he may not be retiring, but he could instead try to coach elsewhere.<\/p>\n

So what does this mean for Philadelphia\u2019s offense? Well, big changes are still on the rise. With Dallas Goedert<\/a> entering free agency and Dickerson still contemplating retirement, the Eagles\u2019 offense could look much different than it has in recent history.<\/p>\n

For now, however, it seems that Sean Mannion has the reins, and Sirianni is taking a step back in his offensive involvement. For better or for worse, the Mannion era is off to a polarizing start.<\/p>\n
