{"id":755607,"date":"2026-02-16T08:42:17","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T08:42:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/755607\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T08:42:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T08:42:17","slug":"former-washington-star-tre-johnson-dies-suddenly-and-unexpectedly-on-family-trip-age-54","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/755607\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Washington star Tre&#8217; Johnson dies &#8216;suddenly and unexpectedly&#8217; on family trip age 54"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former NFL Pro Bowl guard Tre\u2019 Johnson has died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 54 while on a trip with his family, his devastated wife revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, who played for Washington and the Cleveland Browns during his career, died Sunday, his wife <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EYEZEDITING\/posts\/pfbid02zzJAVcUGSMwx6KFreHK8qEBDvDCEY8x4GhjaLgm86G6vTQmz6eAMRbtopqxyj2ANl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Irene wrote on Facebook<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He had been battling health issues before his death.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Former Washington star Tre\u2019 Johnson has died at the age of 54.  Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my husband, Tre\u2019 Johnson, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday February 15, 2026, during a brief family trip,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis four children, Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden, extended family, friends, and I are devastated and in shock. We will miss him so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His cause of death has not yet been revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, who became a history teacher in Maryland, following his retirement, was described by Irene as a \u201cdevoted father\u201d and someone who loved French bulldogs and motorbikes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, an offensive guard, played college football for Temple University before being drafted by Washington in 1994 as a second round pick.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson celebrating with teammate Darrell Green in Oct. 1994.  Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>He played for Washington through 2000, spent 2001 with Cleveland and returned to Washington for a final year in 2002.\u00a0Irene said the athlete was known for his \u201cdurability and strength\u201d during his career at Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The 6-foot-2, 328-pound guard was a Pro Bowl selection in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>After retiring from football, he taught history at the Landon School in Bethesda \u2013 a private school located outside Washington DC. Johnson had been forced to take a leave of absence, his wife said.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson with his family.
