{"id":759156,"date":"2026-02-17T22:57:29","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T22:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/759156\/"},"modified":"2026-02-17T22:57:29","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T22:57:29","slug":"dream-scenario-lands-chargers-68-million-defender","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/759156\/","title":{"rendered":"Dream Scenario Lands Chargers $68 Million Defender"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Los Angeles <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/los-angeles-chargers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chargers<\/a> defensive line was one of the best in the league at taking down the quarterback, registering 45 sacks on the season, tied for the tenth-most in the league.<\/p>\n<p>With a new defensive coordinator, after Jesse Minter\u2019s departure to become the head coach of the <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/baltimore-ravens\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Baltimore Ravens<\/a>, the Bolts can start stocking up pieces on the defensive side of the ball.<\/p>\n<p>Adding 45 Sack Pass Rusher<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5550893\" class=\"size-inline wp-image-5550893\" data-lazy-load=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/GettyImages-1699517873-e1760569577801.jpg\" alt=\"Alex Highsmith\" width=\"782\" height=\"439\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-5550893\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GettyLA can add some more weapons off the edge.<\/p>\n<p>Third-year defender <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/tuli-tuipulotu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tuli Tuipulotu<\/a> led the Los Angeles Chargers in sacks, taking down opposing quarterbacks 13 times, which is also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/stats\/player\/_\/view\/defense\/table\/defensive\/sort\/sacks\/dir\/desc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">sixth-most<\/a> in the NFL.<\/p>\n<p>The next player on the Chargers had around half of Tuli\u2019s numbers, so getting someone to complement the pass rusher on the other side of the defensive line is a priority for the team.<\/p>\n<p>Bleacher Report\u2019s Moe Moton names the Chargers\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/25396495-dream-offseason-trade-scenario-every-nfl-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">dream trade scenario<\/a>, acquiring <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/pittsburgh-steelers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a> EDGE rusher Alex <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/alex-highsmith\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Highsmith<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium css-1vqr2el\">\u201cLast offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed edge-rusher <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/t-j-watt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">T.J. Watt<\/a> to a three-year extension worth $123 million. They may now have to decide between Alex Highsmith and <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/nick-herbig\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nick Herbig<\/a> for the long term. Highsmith has no guaranteed money for the final two years of his deal. Coming off a 7.5-sack campaign, Herbig is entering a contract year,\u201d Moton wrote. \u201cThe Steelers could entertain trade proposals for the latter, then promote the former to a full-time starting role opposite Watt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium css-1vqr2el\">\u201cIf Highsmith is the odd man out of the Steelers\u2019 pass-rushing rotation, he could be a solid addition to the Los Angeles Chargers\u2019 edge-rusher group\u2026 With Pro Bowler Tuli Tuipulotu commanding attention on one side, Highsmith could take advantage of one-on-one opportunities on his side of the line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Highsmith, who will enter his seventh season in the league next season, has recorded 45 sacks and 337 tackles in his career. The Steelers\u2019 defender recorded his best season when he logged 14.5 sacks and tied for the most forced fumbles in the 2022 season.<\/p>\n<p>With multiple Bolts\u2019 pass rushers hitting the free agent market, acquiring a proven threat in the pass rush will help LA\u2019s pass rush, which is facing some questions entering the next season.<\/p>\n<p>The EDGE rusher had a 78 pass rush grade and 82.4 run block grade by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pff.com\/nfl\/players\/alex-highsmith\/43507\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Pro Football Focus<\/a>, which can be valuable to a solid Chargers defense.<\/p>\n<p>Moton mentioned that <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/odafe-oweh\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Odafe Oweh<\/a> will enter free agency and <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/khalil-mack\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Khalil Mack<\/a> is mulling retirement, saying that Highsmith can \u201cbalance\u201d the pass rush in the City of <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/mlb\/los-angeles-angels\/\" title=\"Angels\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"168748\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Angels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Oweh will be a hot name when free agency starts after recording 7.5 sacks in 12 games for the Chargers, making it hard for the team to Chargers replaced Jesse Minter with a collegiate football hire<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles Chargers\u2019 new defensive coordinator, Chris O\u2019Leary, will have some big shoes to fill, replacing Jesse Minter.<\/p>\n<p>The former DC had the Bolts\u2019 defense playing among the best in the league in his two seasons as the defensive playcaller under Jim Harbaugh.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Leary has previously worked under Harbaugh as the safeties coach in the 2024 season, before taking the defensive coordinator job at Western Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>Now back under the Harbaugh, O\u2019Leary can be the next possible former collegiate football DC to excel in the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/\" title=\"NFL\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"168747\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NFL<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day that I come in the building, it will be to make these players proud and give them something to aspire to and to go achieve and also to make them proud because they\u2019ve given me this opportunity,\u201d O\u2019Leary said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chargers.com\/news\/chris-oleary-jesse-minter-defensive-coordinator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">via the Chargers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have the confidence in myself that the foundation of this defense, what makes this defense special and different, I own those areas\u2026 I feel I have a mastery of those areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under O\u2019Leary, Western Michigan allowed 17.4 points per game, the ninth-lowest in the NCAA and tied for the fourth-most sacks in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Taking the next step in his coaching career, the
