The Chiefs<\/a> are looking to clear $44 million in cap space as they aim for another Super Bowl<\/a> win.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for the Sport newsletter\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\tThank you!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes looks on against the Jacksonville JaguarsCredit: Getty<\/p>\n Chiefs quarterback Mahomes throws a pass against the Los Angeles ChargersCredit: Getty<\/p>\n A major change has been made to the 30-year-old quarterback\u2019s contract after a dismal 2025 NFL<\/a> season.<\/p>\n Mahomes<\/a>\u2018 contract has been altered to lower his salary cap number to $34.65 million ahead of the 2026 campaign.<\/p>\n It had previously been set at $78.2 million.<\/p>\n This means that his contract will be back-loaded with Mahomes unlikely to lose money overall.<\/p>\n The decision will save the Chiefs a whopping $43.56 million in 2026.<\/p>\n It comes after the Chiefs failed to reach the playoffs for the first time in a decade.<\/p>\n They finished the 2025 season with just six wins from 17 games.<\/p>\n This is despite the Chiefs reaching Super Bowl LIX a year before.<\/p>\n Quarterback Mahomes signed a 10-year, $450 million deal in 2020.<\/p>\n He has four years remaining on this deal.<\/p>\n The three-time Super Bowl winner missed the end of the 2025 campaign after suffering a torn ACL against the Los Angeles Chargers<\/a> in Week 15.<\/p>\n This has cast doubt over Mahomes\u2019 readiness for the start of the 2026 season.<\/p>\n But Mahomes is targeting a Week 1 return<\/a> for the Chiefs.<\/p>\n His contract restructuring comes as veteran tight end Travis Kelce, 36, continues to ponder his future<\/a> in the league.<\/p>\n Kelce\u2019s current contract with the Chiefs is set to expire ahead of the 2026 season.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Chris Jones has called for Tyreek Hill, both 31, to return to the Chiefs<\/a> after being cut by the Miami Dolphins<\/a>.<\/p>\n
