That includes an end-of-camp scrimmage, which last year replaced the Silver and Blue Game at Mackay Stadium. This year’s scrimmage will take place at Churchill County High School, which won the Class 3A state championship in football in November.

“I’m super excited about this because the athletic department at Churchill County and the football coach are fired up,” Nevada football coach Jeff Choate said during this month’s signing period press conference. “We’re going to go to Fallon, and we’ll do a Friday night scrimmage in Fallon. And that community has always been great supporters of the Pack, and Calvin Connors is a tremendous young coach. He’s got Montana roots, another B.J. (Robertson) relationship. The athletic director there has been fantastic. They’ve got brand new LED lights, so they’re gonna unveil those when we have our spring scrimmage. We’re trying to move that around. We went to Carson City for a couple of years, which I think was fantastic. We’re gonna take it East this year.”

Choate said getting into rural Nevada communities has been one of his goals as he enters his third season leading the Wolf Pack.

“The longer I’m here, the more I feel like we’ve got to continue to expand our reach,” Choate said. “We’re fortunate in the support that we have in Washoe County and in Reno proper, and it’s a good-sized city. But for us to do what we want to do, you have to remember we are the University of Nevada and we’ve gotta have that outreach. Whether that’s getting on a bus and going out to Elko and meeting the Wolf Pack faithful there or taking our football program to Fallon and showcasing what we’ve got there, I think that matters tremendously. I think meeting people where they are is always a really positive thing and not just asking them to always come to us.”

This fall, Nevada plays Western Kentucky (Sept. 5), Montana State (Sept. 12), Middle Tennessee (Sept. 26) and UCLA (Oct. 31) in non-conference games with its eight Mountain West contests to be determined after the recent addition of North Dakota State as a football-only affiliate. The Wolf Pack returns six starters from last season, including OL Jack Foster, OL Zach Cochnauer, OL Snoop Leota-Amaama, QB Carter Jones, DE Dylan LaBarbera and LB EJ Smith.

The Wolf Pack went 3-9 overall and 2-6 in the MW last season, missing a bowl for the fourth straight year, each of which has included at least nine losses.
