Maybe it\u2019s something Baltimore Ravens<\/a> offensive coordinator Declan Doyle will learn over time \u2014 he\u2019s only 29 years old after all and just being put in charge of an NFL offense for the 1st time.<\/p>\n Still, you shouldn\u2019t have to be an NFL<\/a> veteran coach to understand there\u2019s certain things that should be said in public \u2026 and certain things that should either be said behind closed doors or just not at all.<\/p>\n Doyle might also learn the benefits of not calling out your team\u2019s star player in public \u2014 or at least not before you\u2019ve ever coached him in a single game.<\/p>\n Less than one month into his tenure as Baltimore\u2019s offensive coordinator<\/a>, Doyle is already in the public crosshairs and could face NFL punishment over comments about players being expected to attend voluntary offseason workouts \u2014 which would be a direct violation of the NFLPA collective bargaining agreement.<\/p>\n Doyle\u2019s words seemed very much intended for 2-time NFL MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cWe would\u00a0expect (players) to be here and, certainly, it is voluntary,\u201d Doyle said<\/a>. \u201cBut, if you want to say that you\u2019re going to win a championship, you want to say that you have championship standards, and those are your goals and your expectations \u2014 certainly that\u2019s going to take work, that\u2019s going to take collaboration, and that\u2019s going to take the beginning of building the relationship with their coaches (and) other players starting off this next regime on the right foot.\u201d<\/p>\n The CBA is just 1 of those things you can\u2019t get around, which Doyle will likely find out sooner than later.<\/p>\n From the NFL\u2019s CBA: \u201cNo Club official may indicate to a player that the Club\u2019s offseason workout program or classroom instruction is not voluntary.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI understand Declan Doyle wants to send a message,\u201d WC Gridiron\u2019s <\/a>Erik Duerrwaechter wrote on his official X account. \u201cBut, applying pressure to attend voluntary practices that\u2019ll piss the NFLPA off isn\u2019t a wise move. Rookie mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2018Limited\u2019 Dialogue With NFL MVP QB Lamar Jackson<\/p>\n Jackson signed a 5-year, $260 million contract extension before the 2023 season and can make an extra $750,000 by participating in a certain number of voluntary offseason workouts. The last 2 years, he\u2019s given up $1.5 million in the process by not meeting those bonus requirements.<\/p>\n While it might seem like a little thing to outside observers, consider that the last 3 Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks \u2014 Sam Darnold<\/a>, Jalen Hurts<\/a> and Patrick Mahomes<\/a> \u2014 have all been regular attendees at OTAs throughout their careers and in the offseason before their Super Bowl wins.<\/p>\n Jackson has never played in a Super Bowl and made the AFC Championship Game just once, losing to Mahomes following the 2023 season.<\/p>\n Doyle Doubled Down on Voluntary Workouts<\/p>\n Doyle made some interesting comments about his interaction to this point with Jackson in a discussion with the Ravens\u2019 official website<\/a> \u2014 and seemed to stoke the OTA fires even more.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s been limited, but I would say this: I feel a guy that is hungry to learn, hungry to grow, very excited about the opportunity to work together \u2026 as I am excited to work with him,\u201d Doyle said. \u201cA guy that knows his ceiling still hasn\u2019t been reached yet. \u2026 Every conversation\u2019s been really good thus far.
