{"id":775587,"date":"2026-02-25T14:32:27","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T14:32:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/775587\/"},"modified":"2026-02-25T14:32:27","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T14:32:27","slug":"tua-tagovailoa-replacement-emerges-leaving-dolphins-fans-underwhelmed-after-malik-willis-blow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/775587\/","title":{"rendered":"Tua Tagovailoa replacement emerges leaving Dolphins fans underwhelmed after Malik Willis blow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tua Tagovailoa&#8217;s time as the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback is all but over.<\/p>\n<p>The 27-year-old was <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/nfl\/3827579\/tua-tagovailoa-mike-mcdaniel-miami-dolphins-benched-quarterback\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">benched for the final three games<\/a> of a disappointing 2025 season, after throwing for 20 touchdowns and a career-high 15 interceptions in 14 starts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tua Tagovailoa #1 of the Miami Dolphins calls out against the Los Angeles Chargers during the fourth quarter in the game at Hard Rock Stadium on October 12, 2025\" height=\"640\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/tua-tagovailoa-1-miami-dolphins-1061983901.jpg\" data-caption=\"The Dolphins are expected to move on from Tagovailoa this year\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/tua-tagovailoa-1-miami-dolphins-1061983901.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4<\/p>\n<p>The Dolphins are expected to move on from Tagovailoa this yearCredit: Getty<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/nfl\/3831144\/zach-wilson-tua-tagovailoa-quinn-ewers-quarterback-dolphins-mcdaniel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rookie Quinn Ewers<\/a> stepped into his role, and won one of his three games under center as Miami finished 7-10.<\/p>\n<p>That record marked the <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/topic\/miami-dolphins\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dolphins<\/a>&#8216; second-straight losing season, and head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/nfl\/3880573\/mike-mcdaniel-fired-decision-dolphins-new-gm-quarterback\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mike McDaniel was later shown the door<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first two years of McDaniels&#8217; stint were promising for Tagovailoa, who went to the playoffs in 2022 and 2023, while also being named to the Pro Bowl roster.<\/p>\n<p>But things have quickly unraveled, and the No. 5 pick of the 2020 draft suggested at the conclusion of the season that a change of scenery would be &#8216;dope&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE NFL<\/p>\n<p>Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, meanwhile, has confirmed that &#8216;everything&#8217;s on the table&#8217; regarding the $212million QB.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It could go in a lot of different ways,&#8221; Sullivan said at the <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/topic\/nfl\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NFL<\/a> Combine this week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A trade is a possibility, but Tua is aware, his representation is aware. We&#8217;ve had really positive conversations, and, like I said, it&#8217;s kind of all on the table when it comes to Tua at this moment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(Tagovailoa&#8217;s reps) have expressed that he wants to play and that they still think he can play at a high level.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The conversations have been productive, but they have not in particular said that they want to be traded.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Who could replace Tua Tagovailoa as Dolphins&#8217; starting QB?<\/p>\n<p>Any kind of Tagovailoa departure would have a big consequences in Miami.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tua Tagovailoa #1 and Quinn Ewers #14 of the Miami Dolphins embrace during the second half of the game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Hard Rock Stadium on December 21, 2025 \" height=\"640\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1-quinn-ewers-14-miami-1061984047.jpg\" data-caption=\"Tua was benched for rookie Ewers, but any divorce would be expensive\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1-quinn-ewers-14-miami-1061984047.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4<\/p>\n<p>Tua was benched for rookie Ewers, but any divorce would be expensiveCredit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>Releasing the quarterback would produce an <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/nfl\/3984173\/malik-willis-tua-tagovailoa-record-dead-cap-hit-dolphins\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NFL-record $99.2m dead cap hit<\/a>, if done before June 1.<\/p>\n<p>The figure would be split over the next two seasons if Tagovaila is released after June 1, with a $67.4m hit in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan believes it&#8217;s possible to make that whole $99m dead cap hit work, but that it&#8217;s &#8216;not likely&#8217; as the team evaluates options.<\/p>\n<p>There has also been plenty of conversation around who could replace an outgoing Tagovaila.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/topic\/green-bay-packers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Green Bay Packers<\/a> signal caller Malik Willis is the consensus top free agent this year, and buzz is starting to build around him.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals and <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/nfl\/4004480\/shedeur-sanders-malik-willis-ty-simpson-cleveland-browns-quarterback\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cleveland Browns are all expected to be &#8216;aggressively in&#8217; on Willis<\/a>, according to ESPN&#8217;s Ben Solak.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Malik Willis #2 of the Green Bay Packers celebrates with fans after scoring a touchdown in the third quarter against the Baltimore Ravens at Lambeau Field on December 27, 2025\" height=\"640\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/malik-willis-2-green-bay-1061983975.jpg\" data-caption=\"Willis is the top QB free agent, but the Dolphins won't engage in a bidding war\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/malik-willis-2-green-bay-1061983975.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4<\/p>\n<p>Willis is the top QB free agent, but the Dolphins won&#8217;t engage in a bidding warCredit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>He also named the Dolphins as a team with big interest in the QB that seriously impressed when he <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/nfl\/3853137\/malik-willis-packers-jordan-love-bench-decision\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stepped in for Packers starter Jordan Love<\/a> last season.<\/p>\n<p>Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald, though, believes the team won&#8217;t get involved in a &#8216;bidding war&#8217; for Willis, and will therefore lose out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Dolphins are basically announcing at the NFL Combine they won\u2019t be in a bidding war for Malik Willis,&#8221; Kelly posted on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Interesting. Very interesting. Dolphins have annually let themselves be used by agent to raise the price many years running.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NFL&#8217;s Greatest&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1772029944_560_HB-TALKSPORT-OFF-PLATFORM-NFL-QB.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content--intro\">Ranking the top 10&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>With Willis apparently out of Miami&#8217;s reach, the team has been tipped to go after a different name &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/who\/geno-smith\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Geno Smith<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Smith\u2019s tenure in Las Vegas was messy. And that\u2019s being generous,&#8221; Henry McKenna of Fox Sports wrote this week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But remember that &#8212; just the season prior &#8212; he was leading the league in passing yards for the Seattle Seahawks. He\u2019s still a good player.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He\u2019s not the type of player who can exceed his circumstances. Miami is rebuilding, and the Dolphins aren\u2019t exactly an exciting place to land. But Smith isn\u2019t in an exciting place in his career either. Miami&#8217;s QB issue is not solvable with anyone this year, nor any QB that could be drafted next season,&#8221; one wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lmaooooo let\u2019s go from the QB with the second most interceptions thrown to the one with most. That would be so Miami,&#8221; another said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hard pass. Hardest of passes,&#8221; a third wrote of Smith.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Let&#8217;s get the god damn facts straight. The Miami Dolphins is not getting f***ing Geno Smith &#8212; with the interceptions he had. You f***ing idiots,&#8221; a fourth raged.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;First the Willis talk and now this loser. I\u2019m a 50 year Phins fan who\u2019s about to leave this sinking ship,&#8221; a fifth concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Last season, of course, was a huge disappointment for Miami.
