LAS VEGAS (FOX5<\/a>) \u2014 The Las Vegas Raiders and the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada held a Hands-Only CPR and AED training event Saturday for coaches, teachers, parents and youth athletes during American Heart Month.<\/p>\n

The session was held at the Raiders Headquarters and Intermountain Health Performance Center in Henderson. <\/p>\n

Red Cross of Southern Nevada volunteers taught skills that can double or triple a person\u2019s chance of survival during a cardiac arrest, according to the Red Cross.<\/p>\n

The Raiders also donated automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to Nevada Youth Sports and the Vegas Sports Foundation\u2019s NFL Flag League.<\/p>\n

Brienna Love, a heart transplant recipient, and Enttroda and Twayne Hughes \u2014 the parents of Ashari Hughes \u2014 attended the event to share their personal experiences with heart health and emergency preparedness.<\/p>\n

Red Cross volunteers taught Hands-Only CPR, also known as compression-only CPR, which the organization said can be as effective as traditional CPR in the first few minutes of a cardiac emergency. <\/p>\n

Participants were instructed to call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest if someone collapses.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that when emergencies happen, people want to help, and Hands-Only CPR gives them a way to make a difference,\u201d said Rachel Flanigan, executive director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. \u201cTrainings like this empower people to save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each year, more than 350,000 people in the United States experience cardiac arrest, and about three out of four cases occur at home or at work, according to the release. <\/p>\n

About 23,000 children under age 18 experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital annually in the U.S., and nearly 40% of those cases are sports related.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurvival from sudden cardiac arrest depends on preparedness,\u201d said Dr. Alfred Danielian, Raiders team cardiologist. \u201cThrough education, prompt CPR, immediate access to AEDs, and well-rehearsed emergency action plans, we can empower our communities to act decisively and save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
