Two years ago, the Houston Texans<\/a> traded a Day 3 pick to the Cincinnati Bengals<\/a> for Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon <\/a>ahead of his release.<\/p>\n

Could history repeat itself this offseason with another cat-themed team<\/a>?<\/p>\n

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler<\/a>, Detroit Lions<\/a> secondary\u00a0David Montgomery\u00a0wants out enterring the final year of his current contract with the intent of starting elsewhere. The Texans<\/a>, who plan on releasing Mixon<\/a> following a missed season due to a lingering foot injury, should be considered a favorite to inquire about the asking price.<\/p>\n

Since arriving in Detroit, Montgomery has been one of the league’s top No. 2 runners. Splitting carries with All-Pro Jahmyr Gibbs, the former Iowa State standout has averaged over 740 yards per season on 170 carries and scored 10 touchdowns, helping the Lions make the playoffs two of the past three campaigns.<\/p>\n

Houston plans on attacking the market for a running back, including dicussing contract details with Seattle’s Kenneth Walker III and Carolina’s Rico Dowdle. If both are out of the price range of general manager Nick Caserio’s interest, Montimgery’s $6 million salary for 2026 would be within the going rate of what the fanchise is willing to pay.<\/p>\n

At 28, Montgomery would basically be in a similar spot that Mixon was two seasons ago when the Texans traded a seventh-round pick to acquire his services. After arriving in Houston, the Texans gave him a three-year, $27 million extension, with an annual salary of $9 million. Caserio could likely keep the going rate somewhere between $6-$8 million while offering two more years onto his current deal.<\/p>\n

According to Fowler, the word out of Indy is that Detroit would want a decent Day 3 pick, likely targeting a fifth-round selection in return. Should that stop the Texans from pulling the trigger? Without an extension? Yes. With one set in place? Houston might not find a better option on the market.<\/p>\n
