When the Atlanta Falcons<\/a> made the move to sign Kirk Cousins to be their quarterback, many could see the logic in the move.<\/p>\n

But fewer saw the logic in drafting Michael Penix Jr. in the first round shortly after. The Falcons gave a lot of money to Cousins and then drafted his replacement.<\/p>\n

Not ideal.<\/p>\n

Now, Kirk’s future with the Falcons is coming to an end, according to several reports, and here comes ESPN’s Dan Graziano with the final nail in Cousins’ time in Atlanta.<\/p>\n

“The Falcons will release Kirk Cousins before the start of the league year, when his $67.9 million salary would become fully guaranteed under the terms of his reworked contract,” Graziano writes<\/a>. “Atlanta has to pay Cousins a $10 million roster bonus this year, whether he’s on the team or not, but it does not appear to be interested in bringing back Cousins.”<\/p>\n

What’s next for Cousins?<\/p>\n

Well, there are a host of teams needing a quarterback, but how many want a short-term option?<\/p>\n

The New York Jets<\/a>, Arizona Cardinals<\/a>, and even the Minnesota Vikings<\/a> could all be looking Kirk’s way this offseason.<\/p>\n

Granted, does Cousins want to be a starter? If so, that might complicate things for teams wanting to sign him, as they might view him as a backup.<\/p>\n

Either way, the Falcons appear to be done with Cousins and will move forward with Penix Jr.<\/p>\n

And where that leaves Cousins in the quarterback free agency pool is unknown.<\/p>\n
