{"id":787777,"date":"2026-03-02T23:41:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T23:41:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/787777\/"},"modified":"2026-03-02T23:41:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T23:41:18","slug":"washington-commanders-to-pay-dc-1m-to-resolve-lawsuit-over-abusive-workplace-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/787777\/","title":{"rendered":"Washington Commanders to pay DC $1M to resolve lawsuit over abusive workplace culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brian Schwalb, the District&#8217;s attorney general praised the new ownership for rectifying the Commanders&#8217; internal issues.<\/p>\n<p>The former owners of the Washington Commanders will pay the District of Columbia $1 million to resolve <a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/washington-commanders\/2022\/11\/dc-sues-commanders-snyder-over-deception-regarding-sexual-harassment-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a 2022 lawsuit<\/a> that alleged the NFL franchise misled its fans regarding the team\u2019s toxic and abusive workplace culture in order to protect the its brand.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Snyder still owned the team at the time, and as D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb announced the settlement Monday, he praised the new owners for rectifying internal issues, including accusations of rampant sexual assault and harassment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commanders\u2019 current owners have commendably opened a new chapter in the team\u2019s history, committing to ensure all employees are protected from abuse and treated with dignity,\u201d Schwalb said. \u201cI want to thank the victims for coming forward to tell their stories \u2014 without their bravery, none of this would have come to light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A group led by Josh Harris <a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/washington-commanders\/2023\/07\/its-now-or-never-nfl-owners-meet-to-approve-sale-of-washington-commanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">purchased the Commanders in 2023<\/a> from Snyder, who had faced pressure to sell the team after a <a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/washington-commanders\/2022\/10\/timeline-of-washingtons-recent-tumult-under-dan-snyder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">series of scandals<\/a> and decades of perceivable mediocrity on the field.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, new ownership has strengthened the team\u2019s human resources department and implemented an anti-harassment policy and an investigation protocol for complaints of misconduct, Schwalb\u2019s office said <a href=\"https:\/\/oag.dc.gov\/release\/attorney-general-schwalb-resolves-snyder-era\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">in a news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Under the agreement, the team will maintain those reforms, along with paying $1 million to D.C.<\/p>\n<p>The NFL separately fined Snyder $60 million in 2023 after its own investigation concluded that he personally engaged in multiple forms of misconduct, including sexual harassment.<\/p>\n<p>D.C.\u2019s suit accused Snyder and the team of misleading the public about what they knew regarding the hostile work environment and Snyder\u2019s role in creating it.<\/p>\n<p>The Commanders and Snyder deny all the allegations and are not admitting wrongdoing by reaching a resolution, according to the terms of the settlement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"single-page__signature bottom\">Get breaking news and daily headlines delivered to your email inbox by signing up <a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/newsletter-signup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"single-page__signature bottom\">\u00a9 2026 WTOP.
