{"id":789836,"date":"2026-03-03T20:43:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T20:43:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/789836\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T20:43:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T20:43:13","slug":"sean-mcvay-says-los-angeles-rams-having-great-dialogue-with-matthew-stafford-over-new-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/789836\/","title":{"rendered":"Sean McVay says Los Angeles Rams having &#8216;great dialogue&#8217; with Matthew Stafford over new deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">LOS ANGELES &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nfl\/team-page\/los-angeles-rams\/318\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nfl\/team-page\/los-angeles-rams\/318\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Rams<\/a> head coach Sean McVay said the team has had \u201cgreat dialogue\u201d with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nfl\/player\/matthew-stafford\/4869\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nfl\/player\/matthew-stafford\/4869\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Stafford<\/a> entering the final season of the quarterback\u2019s contract, adding that he feels \u201cconfident about being able to work those things out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Stafford, 38, announced his desire to return to the Rams last month after being named the 2025 NFL MVP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had great dialogue,\u201d McVay said Tuesday when asked whether Stafford would play under the final season of his contract or whether the sides would rework his deal. \u201cI think the good thing is that communication that exists. [I] feel confident about being able to work those things out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe were obviously really fired up, had a sense that that was the direction it was going to go, but that\u2019s always the first, that\u2019s always as important as anything is having a guy like him excited and motivated to continue to play at a good clip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Rams have adjusted Stafford\u2019s contract in each of the last two offseasons. Rams general manager Les Snead said the team has \u201cchatted with Matthew with his reps,\u201d calling it a \u201cstable\u201d situation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cSo we\u2019ll continue taking it year by year, but we definitely expect Matthew to be our QB, as he mentioned,\u201d Snead said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Snead said while the two sides will take a year-by-year approach, he did not rule out the possibility of signing Stafford to a contract extension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think that when we say year-to-year, I think it\u2019s a lot bigger than [a] contract,\u201d Snead said. \u201cIt\u2019s us working with Matthew, Matthew working on us &#8230; based on, hey, does Matthew as an individual want to continue doing what it takes to be elite in this league?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Stafford is coming off the best season of his career, winning MVP after passing for 4,707 yards, 46 touchdowns and eight interceptions. It was the first MVP award of his 17-year career. Stafford and the Rams won two playoff games before losing to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nfl\/team-page\/seattle-seahawks\/320\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nfl\/team-page\/seattle-seahawks\/320\" target=\"_blank\">Seattle Seahawks<\/a> in the NFC Championship Game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Stafford has thrown for 64,516 regular-season passing yards, which ranks sixth in NFL history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI do think everything starts with that position,\u201d McVay said. \u201cAnd then you\u2019re able to be able to figure out what it looks like. And so you don\u2019t take for granted how lucky you are to have a guy like him running the show.
