A STAR offensive lineman crowned a Super Bowl champion just one year ago has been cut to create $10 million in salary cap space. <\/p>\n

He played a key part in the Philadelphia Eagles\u2019<\/a> dominant offensive line that saw Saquon Barkley<\/a> rush for over 2000 yards in 2024.<\/p>\n

However, the Los Angeles Chargers<\/a> have now decided to part ways with star guard Mekhi Becton after a tough year for all involved.<\/p>\n

Becton, 26, signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Chargers<\/a> last offseason. <\/p>\n

By deciding to cut him now, they save $10 million against the salary cap and also avoid two impending roster bonuses. <\/p>\n

They were to the tune of $2.5 million, due on March 13, and another $1 million due on March 15.<\/p>\n

The former first round pick selected by the New York Jets<\/a> in 2020 will hit free agency<\/a> once again. <\/p>\n

Head coach Jim Harbaugh<\/a> hoped that the addition of Becton would complete a strong line to protect quarterback Justin Herbert<\/a>. <\/p>\n

It meant that every Chargers starter on the O-line but the center was a former first round NFL draft pick<\/a> heading into the season. <\/p>\n

Unfortunately for them, that began to crumble in early August when left tackle Rashawn Slater tore his patellar tendon<\/a> in practice.<\/p>\n

The season-ending injury came mere weeks after Slater signed a new four-year deal<\/a> worth $114 million.<\/p>\n

From essentially that point on, the Chargers offensive line became their focal problem once again. <\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t aided by Becton not replicating the form that saw him become a Super Bowl champion<\/a> the year before. <\/p>\n

Becton himself dealt with several injuries through training camp and it continued with him throughout the season. <\/p>\n

Then when he was on the field, he was ranked as the 49th-worst guard in pass block win rate (91.2%) and the third-worst lineman (127th) in run block win rate (63.4%).<\/p>\n
