{"id":793115,"date":"2026-03-05T06:19:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T06:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/793115\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T06:19:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T06:19:10","slug":"urban-meyer-reacts-to-proposed-tampering-punishments-for-college-football-coaches-they-nutted-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/793115\/","title":{"rendered":"Urban Meyer reacts to proposed tampering punishments for college football coaches: &#8216;They nutted up&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an attempt to stamp out allegations of rampant tampering, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/news\/ncaa-proposes-stiff-penalties-for-programs-that-add-transfers-outside-of-two-week-portal-window\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NCAA recently announced plans to impose strict penalties<\/a> on Division I football teams that are found to be in violation of adding transfers outside January\u2019s annual two-week portal window. The NCAA\u2019s Division I Cabinet is expected to formally adopt the aforementioned emergency legislation when it meets again in April.<\/p>\n<p>Among the potential NCAA-proposed penalties include a six-game suspension for the violating team\u2019s head coach, to include administrative, recruiting and on-field coaching duties, a multi-million dollar fine equal to 20% of the team\u2019s football budget as well as a reduction in roster spots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttempts to circumvent the transfer window process is an issue for the sport,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/georgia-bulldogs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Georgia<\/a>\u00a0athletic director\u00a0Josh Brooks,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/news\/2026\/2\/25\/media-center-committee-proposes-penalties-for-attempts-to-circumvent-footballs-transfer-process.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">head of the oversight committee\u2019s calendar subgroup, said in the Feb. 25 release<\/a>. \u201cWe want to let everyone know that this is not going to be allowed, and the committee wants to protect the transfer window that has been established.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This move comes in the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/news\/dabo-swinney-incriminates-pete-golding-ole-miss-detailed-timeline-luke-ferrelli-transfer-flip-cal-clemson\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cblatant tampering\u201d allegations<\/a> made against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/ole-miss-rebels\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ole Miss<\/a> and first-year head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/pete-golding-131478\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Golding<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/sites\/tiger-illustrated\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clemson<\/a>\u2018s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/dabo-swinney-131248\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dabo Swinney<\/a> after the Rebels added former Tigers transfer signee\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/luke-ferrelli-153248\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luke Ferrelli<\/a>\u00a0on Jan. 22, nearly a full week after the two-week portal window closed Jan. 16.<\/p>\n<p>Days after Swinney went public with his accusations, Urban Meyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/news\/urban-meyer-questions-ncaa-president-charlie-baker-amid-tampering-controversies-what-the-hell-are-you-doing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blasted NCAA president Charlie Baker for dereliction of duty<\/a> for not holding coaches accountable for their actions. Now, after last week\u2019s announcement, the former Florida and Ohio State head coach commended NCAA for actually implementing serious penalties, so long as they get passed as proposed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a real (punishment) \u2014 they nutted up,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/GjCUpRDk_Zg?si=ADt9adHcmUtH7yWa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meyer said during Wednesday\u2019s episode of The Triple Option podcast<\/a>. \u201cNow let\u2019s see if they really do it. I guess it\u2019s got to go through committee or some nonsense like that. I\u2019m proud of the NCAA, \u2026 well, I\u2019m not \u2014 I want to see this happen (first).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs six games legit for (tampering)? Yeah, and I\u2019d add one: if you mislead or lie to the (NCAA) investigators, you\u2019re done,\u201d Meyer continued. \u201cYou college coaching career is over, and your (athletic director) is done. I\u2019d tie the AD into this as well, because there\u2019s been a couple of examples where the head coach refused to meet with the NCAA. Well the head coach reports to the AD, so how does that happen? \u2026 Your college coaching career is over if you do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Triple Option podcast co-host Rob Stone then pointed out the 20% fine, but Meyer made it clear the only legitimate punishment for violating tampering rules should be a loss of half a season with a lifetime ban for any coaches that attempt to obstruct the subsequent NCAA investigation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen the fines and the vacating of wins and all that nonsense, nonsense, nonsense. That does not stop people from doing bad things,\u201d Meyer concluded. \u201cYou want to stop somebody from violating the rules \u2014 you\u2019re finished.
