Not only do they have to address the looming quarterback question, but they’ll need to fill the other major holes on the offense. They will also need to ensure they do their due diligence on available free agents at positions that might not seem like a top priority, just in case someone currently on the Steelers’ roster happens to leave the team. They have free agents of their own they will need to re-sign, and not all of them have the potential to return.

YouTube / The Rich Eisen Show

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan sits down with Rich Eisen on The Rich Eisen Show at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine.

The Steelers will ultimately end up talking to many high profile free agents, or at least talking about them, regardless of position. One of these very intriguing names has not been linked to the Steelers in many projections, but if the team were to bring this player in, they would certainly become more competitive.

In a recent report from 93.7 The Fan, the Steelers have begun internal discussions on someone that many don’t believe would consider the Black and Gold in his potential list of destinations. However, with how fluid his situation is, they’ll undoubtedly begin looking into his status soon.

“Source: The Steelers have had internal discussions about free agent Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III,” the report said. “And will monitor his situation when the legal tampering period opens on Monday. The Steelers’ Team MVP Kenneth Gainwell III is a FA. And Omar Khan hinted at doing things that ‘might not be normal’ at the [NFL] Combine. Stay tuned.”

As the report says, Steelers running back Kenneth Gainwell has an uncertain future with the franchise. Should they end up losing him in free agency, bringing in a guy like Kenneth Walker III would certainly provide the offense the boost that could make up for losing Gainwell. The team wants to remain competitive at all costs, as shown by their decisions in hires throughout the last few months, so this would be an easy solution to remaining competitive.

Alysa Rubin / Pittsburgh Steelers

Steelers running back Kenneth Gainwell (14) during a regular season matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins.

Adding running back to the list of questions the Steelers would need to answer by losing Gainwell would certainly be another issue in an already tumultuous offseason. However, if the Steelers were somehow successful in replacing him with Walker, the offense gets an immediate boost that will provide them a competitive edge in their quest to continue winning.

Walker III had an incredible season with the Seattle Seahawks, winning Super Bowl MVP and posting 313 yards and four touchdowns throughout the playoffs. He is an impact player that made opposing defensive coordinators take extra steps to stop, and would definitely be able to provide much of the same for the Steelers, should he choose to sign with the franchise.

The best part about adding Walker III to the Steelers’ offense would not only revolve around his individual contribution to what was an inconsistent running game in 2025, but would also be one of the best moves they could make if they are serious about giving their future starting quarterback the best shot at success.

Steelers Would Make Starting Quarterback’s Job Much Easier By Signing Kenneth Walker III

When Walker III and the Seahawks played the Steelers, he tore them apart on the ground for 105 yards, along with a receiving touchdown against them. His masterful performance on the ground allowed Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold to be efficient through the air, not just against the Steelers, but all the way to the Super Bowl. Should the Steelers find a way to sign Walker III, they would be giving the same competitive edge to whoever the starting quarterback is.

Even if the franchise does end up losing Gainwell, Walker III would more than make up for the performance and ensure the next starting quarterback has plenty of targets on offense.

Rod Mar / Seattle Seahawks

Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III (9) during a regular season matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers.

What did you think about the report of the team internally talking about Walker III?
