Trent McDuffie, who recently was traded from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Los Angeles Rams, signed a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turfshowtimes.com\/los-angeles-rams-news\/136063\/trent-mcduffie-rams-extension-with-rams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">four-year contract extension<\/a> on Sunday at a total value of $124 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Averaging $31 million per year and including $100 million in guarantees, McDuffie now sits atop the rankings at his position in both categories. How long he will remain in the top spot will be seen, however, because there is a clear candidate to surpass him in all of those categories in the near future: New England Patriots standout Christian Gonzalez.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Coming off his third season in the NFL, Gonzalez is now eligible to sign an extension. The Patriots have expressed interest in working with the 23-year-old beyond the duration of his current rookie contract.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cObviously, we love Christian and we\u2019ll talk about those things when the time is appropriate. But Christian took a big step forward this year,\u201d Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said about Gonzalez at the NFL Scouting Combine. \u201cHe took a big step forward with his play style and we\u2019re excited about having him be a part of our team for the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Gonzalez joined the Patriots as the 17th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, signing a standard four-year deal that also includes a fifth-year option. He quickly developed into one of the best cornerbacks in football, and earned second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 2024 and 2025, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">While an extension seems like the best-case outcome for both parties, that fifth-year option presents a fallback option for 2027. Its value was recently announced as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patspulpit.com\/new-england-patriots-salary-cap\/122727\/christian-gonzalez-fifth-year-option-contract-value\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fully-guaranteed $18.119 million<\/a>. The Patriots have until May 1 to exercise it, but also could extend Gonzalez at any point in time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Once they do, he is expected to become the latest CB to reset the market.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The cornerback market has been reset in the NFL once more.
