President Trump during Friday\u2019s roundtable on college sports<\/a> \u201cexpressed confidence\u201d that legislation to provide a path forward for college sports \u201cwould be in place before football season kicks off in the fall,\u201d which would coincide with this year\u2019s midterm elections, according to Jeff Mordock of the WASHINGTON TIMES. The plan is to get college sports leaders to \u201cagree on the best path forward and then reshape that plan into legislation that can get through\u202fCongress.\u201d Trump said, \u201cI think we\u2019ll get it through\u202fCongress. We have a very good chance. I think it will be bipartisan\u201d (WASHINGTON TIMES, 3\/6<\/a>).<\/p>\n

PROBLEM SOLVED? Trump on Friday said that he will write an executive order within a week that \u201cwill \u2018solve all of the problems\u2019 brought forth\u201d during the roundtable. Trump: \u201cIt will be very all-encompassing. And we\u2019re going to put it forward, and we\u2019re going to get sued. … I\u2019ll have an executive order, which will solve every problem in this room, every conceivable problem, within one week, and we\u2019ll put it forward. We will get sued. That\u2019s the only thing I know for sure.\u201d ESPN.com\u2019s Heather Dinich wrote former football coach Nick Saban, sitting two seats to the left of Trump, was the first to speak on behalf of the college space. Saban said that the ability to \u201chelp prepare players for success in life … through personal development and academic support\u201d became \u201cimpossible to do in this system.\u201d Lawmakers and others in the room also \u201crallied around hope\u201d that the SCORE Act<\/a> — which would create a national NIL and college athletics regulatory structure — will pass. Texas Tech booster and Saving College Sports founder Cody Campbell, who has been working on the issue for months<\/a>, cautioned that as the bill moves into the Senate, \u201ccertain dynamics are going to change\u201d (ESPN.com, 3\/6<\/a>).<\/p>\n

COLLECTIVE PROBLEM: In Columbus, Dan Aulbach noted former football coach Urban Meyer during the roundtable \u201cvoiced his strong disapproval\u201d of NIL collectives, saying that the use of them is \u201ccheating.\u201d Meyer said, \u201cThat makes my skin crawl when I hear a collective. Get the donors out of it.\u201d He continued, \u201cIf a business owner wants to hire [Ohio State WR] Jeremiah Smith and pay him a certain amount of money, that can happen. But the universities cannot set that up. They can make sure that the kids go to school, make sure that they graduate, treat them fairly … but they cannot get involved in the financial marketing of your players.\u201d Meyer also spoke at length about \u201cextending antitrust protection to college sports\u201d and \u201cvoiced his issues with\u201d the SCORE Act (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 3\/6<\/a>).<\/p>\n

THE OLD WAYS: YAHOO SPORTS\u2019 Ross Dellenger wrote Trump wants to \u201cput college sports\u2019 proverbial toothpaste back into its collective tube.\u201d Trump told a room of \u201castonished and stoic faces\u201d that he would like to see the industry \u201cgo back to the old system.\u201d Trump: \u201cI\u2019d like to go exactly back to what we had and ram it through a court.\u201d The executive order will \u201cattempt to do just that,\u201d as it is \u201cintended, it appears, to reimplement unlawful policies of the pre-NIL era.\u201d Dellenger noted Friday\u2019s meeting, scheduled for an hour, \u201cturned into a wild near-two-hour political meltdown of sorts\u201d — a president \u201ccriticizing his enemies: the courts for \u2018destroying\u2019 college sports, and congressional Democrats for preventing legislation to pass that might fix it.\u201d Meanwhile, the industry of college athletics — its leaders resistant to collective bargaining — \u201ctwists in the winds of soaring player salaries, unenforceable rules, mounting legal threats and budget deficits\u201d (YAHOO SPORTS, 3\/6<\/a>).<\/p>\n
