Only two receivers in NFL history have posted 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons. One is the greatest player of all-time, Jerry Rice. <\/p>\n

The other is Mike Evans \u2014 and he, too, will soon be a 49er.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old wide receiver is expected to sign a three-year contract worth up to $60.4 million when the new league year begins on Wednesday, according to multiple reports. The 49ers aren\u2019t necessarily counting on Evans to be with the team for all three of those years but have deemed the structure of this deal necessary to spread out the wideout\u2019s salary-cap hit.<\/p>\n

Evans, who\u2019s been with Tampa Bay for the first 12 seasons of his career, reportedly turned down a strong offer to return to the Buccaneers. Earlier this month, Evans released his criteria for a new team: <\/p>\n

– A quarterback he believes in
– Chance at a Super Bowl
– A top-shelf offensive coordinator
– Promise of high-volume touches<\/p>\n

The 49ers boast Brock Purdy, who\u2019s been the NFL\u2019s highest-rated QB since joining the league in 2022. Their play caller is head coach Kyle Shanahan, whom many consider to be the best in the league. And they won 13 games, including a playoff matchup, during a roster-reset 2025 season \u2014 which makes them Super Bowl contenders. <\/p>\n

As far as the promise of high-volume touches, the 49ers have been desperate for an \u2018X\u2019 receiver ever since Brandon Aiyuk tore his ACL in 2024 and subsequently defected from the team. The team voided Aiyuk\u2019s $27 million of 2026 guarantees, opening room for this signing \u2014 which should afford Evans plenty of chances to touch the ball.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The 49ers have ranked No. 32 and No. 24, respectively, in average separation at the time of catch or incompletion in each of the past two seasons. The Seattle Seahawks\u2019 vaunted defense completely smothered the receiving corps in two losses over three games to end the season. At 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, Evans will give the 49ers the type of tall target that Purdy has excelled throwing to dating back to his college days at Iowa State. <\/p>\n

Evans immediately becomes the foundational pillar that the 49ers had hoped Aiyuk would be upon the signing of his megadeal, and he can also help build a bridge to more consistent stardom from Ricky Pearsall \u2014\u00a0who\u2019s been good when healthy but not healthy nearly enough. Pearsall fits much better in the \u2018Z\u2019 (flanker) receiving role, while young targets Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing will compete for the third receiver spot. The 49ers can also dip into a deep draft class at the position. <\/p>\n

Pearsall was limited to nine games due to a knee injury while Cowing missed the entire season due to lingering hamstring issues. Watkins dealt with a high ankle sprain early in the year that set him back as the Ole Miss product finished the season with two catches for 26 yards.<\/p>\n

Christian McCaffrey led the 49ers in receiving yards and free-agent Jauan Jennings led the team in touchdowns, but tight end George Kittle has reliably been one of Purdy\u2019s most valuable weapons in the passing game. After back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, Kittle ended 2025 with 628 yards and seven touchdowns before tearing his Achilles in the 49ers\u2019 wild-card round matchup with the Eagles.<\/p>\n

The biggest concern for the 49ers is an obvious one given Evans\u2019 age: Health. After those 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career, Evans\u2019 snap counts have diminished over the past four years \u2014 from 1,003 snaps in 2022 to just 357 snaps last season. Evans\u2019 2025 season ended with a broken clavicle in Week 7. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The 49ers are banking on a return to more consistent availability from Evans. In an ideal world, though, they won\u2019t need him for the long haul. They just need to prop up a beleaguered receiver room and give Purdy a chance for the time being. And Evans\u2019 illustrious track record certainly gives them a good chance of doing that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Want more ways to catch up on the latest in Bay Area sports?
